I won't go to DE's with open passing. I don't even really understand why that's a thing.
One of the groups I go with doesn't really use passing zones, which is fine by me. They have two rules. You must get a point-by and you can't be side-by-side at an apex. That's it, and that's fun for the advanced drivers.
But open passing? I can't see why I'd want that in a DE. Why leave the door open to being surprised by someone you didn't realize was there?

I think the problem was the GT3 was showing him where to start braking, and when the GT3 got the gap the mustang was lost.
Here are the brake points, crash lap and lap prior. That was more than a brain fart, he could have killed the GT3 driver.

GT3 should have left racing room and Mustang should have made a safe re-entry without gaining an advantage.
Darwin awards galore in that video, not the least for posting it on YT in the first place.
On a serious note, glad the GT3 driver made it out alive and without major injuries. Could have ended much worse.

We aren't talking about racing here #1. this isn't race craft or traffic management. Why would you be worried about car positioning in a DE without point by's. If someone is quicker let them go. Stay on line and they drive around you. Simple concept. #2. Yes, you can control YOUR car with car positioning but everyone else on track are like reactions and emotions, the only person that can control them are the individual themselves. You can do whatever you want with your car, doesn't mean you can CONTROL what I do with mine... If you decide to move over and I punt you off track how in control of me were you? If I choose to lift, take evasive action or just ram you like the Mustang did the ONLY person controlling what I do is me...
I would never assume I dictate to anyone else on track... I control myself and similar to riding a motorcycle try to anticipate the dumbest thing possible someone else can do and have an out prepared for it just in case. In some cases you just can't be prepared for stupid as in the video above...

No, it was a brain fart, that's not a mechanical. Same peak G-force.
If you've ever been there, there is a lot of self preservation that kicks in on that braking zone...you have to not be concentrating, and actively thinking about something else that overpowers your subconscious, because it's VERY hard to miss it and the voice screaming in your head. .

Mustang guy doesn't drive like that without track insurance... and he is specially not going to be nonchalante about it and post it on youtube.
I was tracking this past Tuesday. The track organizer in drivers meeting says that he is proud of the safety record during his events. A couple of us looked at each other with stunned faces. Nine months ago, a track worker died, two cars got totaled in an oil slick. His open passing group is one of those that Lockton won't insure.
A lot of you guys involved in the "business" side of things with HPDE sure seem to protect things. You'll only lose more credibility with your protectionist type postings.

Here is a question - why did you go back to running with a track organizer where a corner worker died, two cars totaled, and Lockton won't insure?
I run almost every DE my region has to offer, plus I run in about 5 PCA races a year with a DE the day before, and also do a bunch of random days here and there with other groups. I've never seen car to car contact at a DE.
