Default Michelin vs Pirelli Slick

Hi....I have been using Pirelli DHs (new and scrubs) for DEs/Track Days/ Time Trials some time now but wondered how the Michelin Slick compares...they are bit more economical (price) but wonder how they stack against the DHs in performance and durability. Thanks in advanced.

Brand new Michelin slicks may be slightly faster that the Pirelli, but that advantage rapidly goes away. But you're not using them brand new. Generally, the DH provides a longer useful life with relatively less performance degradation.

^^^ This - I run both and the Michelins are pretty much dead after 150 miles. This is not heat cycle dependent. Tire construction is totally different from the Pirelli with stiffer sidewalls, especially with the "M" spec tire this year that they have introduced for IMSA and high load tracks.

If it was a Mich N1, then take the French every time, single best tyre I've ever driven.
If it's (and most likely is) the Mich N2, then go Pirelli every time. So bummed at how much worse the new Michelin is compared to the old. Only tyre worse is the Conti slick!
Can't go wrong with the Pirelli's, but also dont count out Yokohama, they make a good Porsche tyre!

Thanks all for the input.....I'm a bit limited by wheel size (19") and I have been very happy with the Pirelli DH so far, new and scrubs, they do last a long time.
Also, the sizes on Pirelli are a bit better than the Michelin's....on the other hand, saving $600 per set (new) sounded tempting to make a move to Michelin.
I'm trying not going back to Hoosiers R7s

The new Michelin slicks are S8 and S9. N2 is for GT3 Cup series.

The ones I'm considering are S8A front and S9A rear....in 19"

It's weird the Pirelli costs more than Michelin. Used to be the other way around...

Is it possible Pirelli has inflated the price for the non-competitive market and offers discounts to teams, etc? I’ve seen more and more people in DE jump to them from R7s. I think part of this is that last year the Hoosiers just weren’t that reliable, and part is track rats in older caged cars trying to keep up with all the fancy new hardware Porsche is producing.

I think it is related to their distribution model with exclusive distributors. They are a PCA Club Racing Sponsor and as a racer you pay full price. I think the same holds true for PWC - no discounts.

no one told me this! yep, exactly right. fantastic for the initial heat cycle and a race... then, they are no better than a used hoosier and then, no better than a real used hoosier by heat cycle 3.
