anyone convert a porsche 996 turbo into a race car

Hi all,

just curious if anyone here has experience doing this. I looked at a lot of different options and for me, I just love all the looks of the Carrera styling. When I was considering choices for a dedicated track car, I looked at lots of different options including spec boxter, spec Carrera, gt3 cup. I think with the cup cars, I’m too new to the sport and the cost is too much for me to run one and be safe. With boxter and cayman, I don’t like the way they look as much either.

I ‘I have noticed a few guys running 996 turbos on the track and was curious if anyone had experience with building and driving these cars at the time trial and race level?

Are there any components or things to watch for in doing this? What are the modifications that you would use?

thanks

ask on the 996 turbo page for better response.
They take a lot of mods to really be competent on track. Transmission requires cooling and car is heavy and 4 wheel drive so need to convert to 2. Coolant lines need to be pinned/welded.
A user Powderhound is most experienced. If budget is a concern don't go 996 turbo. Buy a spec boxster or cayman if want to get serious or spec 944.

Seems like a lot of work. I think there’s a well set up Spec996 for sale here for about $35k...just buy that if you’re set on a 911

Sure it can be done. Here's one that sold on RL last year, which gives you a good idea of a parts list that you can price out. https://rennlist.com/forums/vehicle-...-race-car.html

I have to imagine the only economical way to do this would be to wait for a built car to come up for sale. If you're going to build yourself, you might as well just buy & run a 996 or 997 cup.

Yes and they go well - The winner of Targa West last year drove a 996 turbo (4 day state/national level road rally - in Australia)

Thanks for the feedback. I’m kinda stuck with the car that I own. I will check out the 996 turbo forum.

‘very nice to hear this. I’ve driven with a couple of guys who are very fast drivers in their turbos. I also love this version of the turbo. Great looks and very nimble.

All race cars are experiments - see my post above.

Call Dwain Dement at Vision Motorsports in Laguna Hills - 949.770.2888. Vision has done this at least a couple of times, including building a car that we co-drove to win the the POC Tribute to Lemans a few years ago.

Cheers,
