Default IMSA Driver Ratings

This is interesting. https://sportscar365.com/imsa/iwsc/s...rating-in-gtd/

Not sure I agree with Madison on the way he'd like to see what driver ratings get to race in which series, but it's a fresh opinion.

If Bronze drivers didn't get to drive in GTD, he wouldn't gotten his foot in the door to begin with. And no, he's not on the level of a Joerg Bergmeister or Patrick Long. I'd say he's just under Bryan Sellers, who is also a Gold, as IMSA has anointed Madison. Certainly, he's a very fast Silver.

A few years ago, Ryan Eversley made a great argument that FIA driver ratings were arbitrary and actually rose to the level of restraint-of-trade! He was hot! IMSA fixed this by enacting a rule to make changes to the FIA issued ratings separately for their events.

Always fun headed into the "off-season."

Glad IMSA didn't have driver ratings in '73.

The ratings are complete BS. If they could be implemented and applied properly I'd support them, but they aren't any where near that level now... so I'd prefer they simply go away.

They have the potential to greatly help the world of sports car racing, but don't at the moment. They're simply another system that can be abused by certain folks while punishing others.

Personally, I don't agree with Madison either, but not because I'm a bronze.

i remember your particularly cogent and well reasoned argument back when Ryan's screed came out. I agree with you, 100%

I read an article a few years back that said there were far fewer opportunities for gold and most drivers actually preferred to be silver, bronze and then gold in that order. Can't find the article so maybe I am mis-remembering it.

Three minutes to find the correct article! You are better than Google and hopefully not tracking all my data.

Nope, just knew Marshall Pruett had written it and that it was pretty good. Sort of an esoteric complaint, but more and more club-level drivers are climbing the ranks... No pun intended!

I get why the Pros care, but why do the Ams want this? How does it further $$ in the sport?

Where's the whole list. It would be interesting to see who is not Gold.

Mike H is correct: the way it is currently implemented is too subjective and too open to playing favorites

It's complicated. To encourage the funding of teams by Am's and to prevent the trickledown of the Pro/Pro lineups in the factory teams at the highest level of International sports car racing, the sanctioning bodies require less experienced drivers to share with higher experienced, higher ranked drivers in the lower formula class or cars. It's very complicated, for sure. More later.

Question for those who may know:

if a driver from nascar, F1, or even a two wheel racer comes over to race with imsa how do they determine their rating?

All based on the FIA ratings (which determines driver pairings across classes for International events). Here: https://www.fia.com/fia-driver-categorisation

The top shows the requirements, at the bottom of the page is the PDF with the current Bronze/Silver/Gold/Platinum rankings.

Pretty much any Am (or aspiring Pro) driver can enter the rankings at Bronze, when you win in minor championships. Then, upon review of lap times and results, the ranking can go to Silver. Gold and Platinum are generally reserved for major championship winners or factory drivers.

As drivers crest a certain age (50, then 55, then 60), they are downgraded! Or if they don't race consistently for a certain time span.
