Most fun race car you’ve driven?
I got to wondering - besides obviously good competition, reliability, and adequate affordability - what makes for the most fun time spent in a race car (or track only car). Thinking in terms like the character of the car, the way it must be driven, the intangibles like sound and road feel, and that sort of thing. Maybe it’s raw g-forces, maybe it’s just that it makes you feel like Steve McQueen.
What’s the most fun race car you’ve driven, and why?

Late 1960's McLaren CanAm car. Pure, undiluted, noisy, analog....like an extension of my hands and feet and brain on track.

I've never had the opportunity to drive something exotic, but each progression of car which I have owned has been my favorite.
I started DE in a 2000 Audi A4 - heavy, street tires, etc., but I had a ton of fun.
When I bought a 1987 944 I couldn't believe how it handled and it was awesome.
Next car was my 2006 Cayman S, the first "proper" race car I owned, and I could not believe what it could do.
Now I have driven my "new to me" 2011 Cayman S GTB1 class car once, in the rain, and I could not believe the power and handling of the car.
So I have to say the most fun race race I have ever driven has always been the last race car I have driven!

1969 911 R Type. By far the most fun you can have with your clothes on. 1,850 lbs, no ABS, no traction control, no power steering, double clutching on downshifts, 901 gearbox, no power under 5,500 rpm and loud!! There is so much going on that you can get totally exhausted from just a 30 min stint.

Not a car, but certainly something serious to race, a shifter kart with a factory tuned 125 cc KTM championship winning engine from a motorcycle racing series -- power to weight ratio of an F1 car and it went like stink!! It's been 11 years since I drove it around a track and I still can't get it out of my mind

Same here, simply overwhelming performance. I felt like a green student with things coming at me so fast that I could not process. When I finally got a handle on it, my smile was a mile wide.

Palatov D1, made only a few miles from my house and borrowed from a fellow 991.1 Turbo S owner in trade to drive my Lamborghini.
Thing is insane AWD with 430 HP at 10,000 RPM in a single seat track monster that is capable of 3.2 Gs of grip and a sequential tranny. He said it was similar to driving a 1980 Formula 1 Car. Oh and they start at $105K complete and use off the shelft parts like Hoosier R7's from spec miatas and standard brake bits for low operating costs. Weighs only 1,100 pounds yet has a chassis for a 2,500 + pound weight class to be safe on the track with street cars.

My '03 Corvette Z06 is the most fun car I've driven on track. It's a real driver's car. It's also amazingly forgiving. For me personally, track driving only gets fun when you are trying to get down to that last second or half second that you know you are capable off. I've driven better cars, like a Chevron B16, but I never had enough track time to get to that point, so I didn't enjoy them as much.
I've had an FF and driven a Sports 2000, but for me personally those cars aren't as exciting. They are totally cool in many other ways, but for me personally driving them on track just wasn't as exciting as driving my Corvette. Low-powered cars are very challenging to drive well, but they are not as much fun as high-powered stuff. That is, unless you are racing wheel-to-wheel with similar cars.
