New old tires
I have a question on using tires that are several years old, but have been properly stored. Is there any degradation of the rubber in, say, a 5 year old slick that's been properly stored out of the sun?

Yes.

Absolutely!

Run away from those.

i had RA1s from WC that i used successfully 5 years later and they were great. in fact, those times I ran on them in 2010, (2005 stamped tires) were near as good as my top times over the past 10 years.. not great, but not bad , BUT i wrapped them in saran wrap. when i pulled the wrap off, you could see the difference in the color of the rubber on areas of the tire that were not covered. (btw) . i just ran some Pirelli DH from a 2013 event, that were stored in a garage. they were pretty slick for 3-4 laps, then they became just below the grip of a decent set of hoosiers. so, i think that was the age coming into play. (and no wrap) so, thats what i think you will experience. 5 years, just stored in a garage, no wrap.. if its a slick, it will drive like a used decent hoosier.

I consider tires a safety item. Toss them!

I'm sure a 5 year old condom that was properly stored would probably be safe too.
Don't trust old rubber. |

There is NOTHING unsafe about a 5 year old tire stored properly. However, if you , or anyone think there is... please let me know and ill take them. ;)
I also have piles of used rotors and pads you can take. To the OP, we are all on budgets but tires is one thing you've got to be smart about. Ignore Mark's comments. |
ahhh, the strawman speaks!
Now, have the goodyear slicks have one heat cycle and been wrapped in saran wrap? oh.............now you get it. :)
