dbbarron - Now I'm finally connecting the dots here. You and I spoke in the paddock at Tamworth last weekend and we talked about your car and your plans. I had the gray Cayman "gentleman's race car". The thing that drove me to the Cayman was consideration of maximum safety. I decided I wanted a fully caged car after seeing a bad crash where an expensive new car got totaled on the track (fortunately the driver was not seriously hurt). The GT3 that I had been tracking had a half cage but I didn't want to make it a full cage because it would devalue the car and make it not driveable on the street, which I still wanted to do. I am enjoying the Cayman immensely.

dbarron, I am standing at a similar crossroad like you. I am driving a 997.2 C4S/PDK but what you initially wrote could have been written by me.
I think one other factor (in a addition to the $$$ you want to spend) is how much TIME are you planning to spend on the track in the coming years.
I usually can squeeze maybe 8 track days / year out and am wondering if that's enough to rectify the expenses for a dedicated RC.
I was thinking about Spec-Boxster but I know that my schedule won't match up with the schedule of Spec-Boxster races, so that's a non-starter.
sorry, just rambling...

Awesome little cars that hit the sweet spot between performance and value, IMO.

After much consideration and lots of gratitude for all the posts, I think it will come down to:
SPB
F-Stock Boxster
(the wildcard) 80's air cooled RC.
If anyone knows of a well-sorted car for sale, kindly let me know.

mmmm, good choice.
Just to remember : if you want to save, the leightest the car is, the cheaper it will be to run.
i.e.: gas, brake pads, tires, etc..
Then, imo, for track, a car must have the engine at the right place.
I had multi 911 non stop for 30 years, and since few years I enjoy an old modified Boxster S, that was low cost to purchase, and love it big time.
I also have supert great track experience with many Lotus Exige, and these are also super great.
