Didn't they say spinal fracture? Does that mean a clean break?
I can't answer that but with all the spinal stuff and all the upcoming surgeries to his broken extremities he's got a long road to get back into a race car, much less lead a somewhat normal life (if he's even able to do so); can only wish him the best. Big picture is that he's a very young man; hopefully he won't need to be in and out of surgery as he ages.

Jeff Krosnoff's upper body hit a street light pole with the worst possible impact exposure. He died instantly. Was in 1996. Was the most horrible single car racing accident I've ever seen and I happened to be watching it live on TV. A F1 style halo may have saved his life, but we will never know. A corner worker was killed by that same crash by some of the flying debris. Car basically exploded, some of the tub was intact. Jeff's motto was "Stay Hungry" and was a very popular guy with the rest of the drivers sort of like Justin Wilson was. Jeff happened to be from my home town, Tulsa, Oklahoma, but I didn't know him personally.

Positive news, though sobering at the same time. Wickens now breathing unassisted and talking.

This is going to be a process of significant uncertainty and require time and patience.

With no medical expertise, and no knowledge past what’s said and not said in the news releases, I’ve been figuring exactly that.

Open cockpit/wheel cars have no business racing in tight ovals.

Heard that durning last nights race. Got me wondering whether the statement from track medical after the race, that he was awake and alert and being transported to hospital really meant; he was resuscitated at the track and was then able to blink in response to questions? Do hope he has a full recovery!

Can't believe there are racers desperate (or passionate?) enough to find this level of risk acceptable. What was Alonso thinking?

Pocono is not a tight oval, it's a 2.5-mile isosceles triangle. I think they need to put restrictors on the cars (and/or pull turbos) and run skinnier tires. With the skinnier tires they will still be racing at the edge of adhesion, but it will just be at a lower velocity. Restrictor plate without skinnier tires would just lead to pack racing and that would be bad too.

If you are referring to the crash at Spa, it wasn’t Alonso’s fault. He got bumped from behind by Nico Hulkenberg.

No, I was referring to Alonso's decision to leave F1 and move to Indy (open wheel oval-wall racing).

I'd be willing to bet you didn't do well in high school geometry.

Ha ha, well it was a long time ago and no, not my fav. subject. As as Moe would say, I'm much better than a moron, I'm just an imbecile. The Pocono "tri-oval" would be a scalene triangle.
I hope I got it right that time..
