Still baffled by this CL crap on GT cars after all these years. One of the reasons I've been reluctant to "upgrade" from my 6gt3 to a newer GT model. I look at a car, like it, then I see the CL's and my attention drifts away...

It's not enough to keep me from wanting one but I'll be honest in that any time I see them they make me a little bit angry inside. Picture of a GTS on a website? Oooh... oh... center locks... *anger*

Every event I go to, I see Centerlock cars running without caps.
I did a DE last season with another region (who shall remain nameless), and they made me run the Turbo S with the center lock caps OFF while on track. When I questioned it, guy told me "off or nothing." Needless to say, they came off for the event.
Every other region lets me keep them on, but seeing as I rarely track the Turbo S any more, it's kind of moot.

I would have argued till I was blue in the face. Definitely not what Porsche recommends because of the issue with wear if you do it.

I'd escalate that. Can't blame the guy that's enforcing the rule as he doesn't know any better. But there's gotta be SOMEONE there that can override it.

Porsche has long publicly stated that there is unsprung weight reduction due to the CL design. for example in the GT2 RS, the published report in Excellence this month states that it is 24 lbs.
5 lug conversion is only available for 997 cars. The 991's are very different in the uprights, bearing size's and brake mounting between GTS, Turbo and GT3/GT3RS. The parts for the non GT cars are not compatible with the GT cars which is why no one is offering anything for the 991's. In Porsche's defense, the issue's they created with the 997 Centerlock system where designed out of the 991 system so its much stronger than it was with 997's. Its why the service cycle for the 991 for track driven car's is significantly different that the 997's and why it makes so much sense on the 997 to do the conversion to 5 Lug.

Had this happen when I first tracked the 991 GT3. Tech said pull them off. I refused, escalated and found the rule was put in place years ago for 997 CL and was not to be applied for 991 CL according to their chief safety steward. Glad I pushed back. Since then I only check the locks every day and replace the caps.

This has been an interesting and humorous read. But I wanted to check again where we stand on checking (re-checking) torques at the track with modern center locks from Porsche/Audi/Lamborghini. Do you have to redo the whole process at the track to ensure the wheels will stay fixed and torqued correctly from thermal expansion, heat cycling etc? OR can you rest assured if the wheels were correctly torqued (the process) prior to the event they should be fine?

My approach is to torque them the evening before each track day using the Porsche recommended procedure. One less thing to worry about in the mornin, Local PCA for the COTA events had a requirement to torque them each morning and have Tech sign off on them. Have not driven with them recently though.

OK - the reason I ask is I just drive my car to the track with tools in it. May not have the necessary space for huge torque bar and jack.

I can fit all the tools in my car. Race jack, Precision Instr 3 pc torque wrench, 24in wood clamp. etc.

The procedure must be done when cold too, well not hot, and complete the entire procedure, even the lube...

Best approach is dumping the POS faux center locks and installing effective and reliable 5 lug hubs
