Default Englishtown Old Bridge Township News

After 52 years of NHRA Drag Racing, Englishtown announces it is suspending all Drag Racing Events.
The rest of the facility will remain.
I personally have been going since 1975, missed some years while kids were growing, but was always a special place

Bummer. Some of my earliest racing memories are stopping at the Wawa on the way in to get subs for lunch and watching the races with my Dad when I was a kid.

I just saw that announcement. Sad day. Ran many a quarter mile there over the years and even shot some tv shows there. Very sad

We were teenagers and use to camp in tents there in the 1970s.
It was like a zoo, fun times for the races.

So now are there any other dragstrips in the northeast? Will they resurrect the Summernationals?

Sad to see Englishtown Raceway's drag strip closing, in my 997 turbo days it was the convenient venue for quick & easy 'test-n'-tunes'. Bolt on a part or modify a tune and head to Englishtown for a few 1/4 mile runs to test the "gains"...LOL

Atco is still running - in South Jersey. They ran many unmuffled days - more than RP.

The rumor mill is flying on the future of RP. The Napp family has owned it for many years and they've come under increased pressure from local homeowners (who all built long after the track was running) for noise complaints. Old bridge township is a commutable distance to NYC and land values and building has increased. Some speculate the entire property will be sold off to developers, and that this is just the beginning.

Maple Grove, in Reading, PA
On the NHRA tour, it is one of the fastest tracks, due to a little cooler weather, it is run later in the season.
It is nice, but nowhere the track that Englishtown was.

That makes sense, the turn out for spectators at the Summernationals, has always been huge.

I will miss the noise from the top fuelers at the house during the Summernationals. We are about 11 miles as a crow flies. Sounds of Summer.

I don't think they ever solved this. All the cash from the Dieselnationals the prior weekend

Grew up in Marlboro and can still remember summer nights hearing the engines roar from the backyard... Spent many an open night there with my 4 banger twin turbo Conquest TSI eating Mustangs for lunch. Ah, good times...

Same thing happened in my old town, Sydney Australia. We lost 4 track in the space of 4 years. All ended up as housing developments. The dragstrip they closed down that I spent every Friday and Saturday night at from 10 till 17 yrs of age, they turned the dragstrip into the main street of the development. It was odd to stand there and look down the dragstrip with houses each side of it. And to make sure no one used it as a drag strip again, they put 4 roundabouts on it and 2 speed humps.

All closed because of noise and encroaching population. Sad.
