Alonso sees Daytona for the first time

Rolex teams began unloading Thursday for the Roar.

"Many new things for me. I saw the corners, and the banking is quite steep here compared to Indianapolis," said Alonso, who raced in the American open-wheel classic last May. "I'm really looking forward to experiencing how it feels in the car. Also, you have to share the car, the setup, the seat position, there's many things you need to compromise. It's a good challenge, with many new things – traffic management, tires, driving at night. I'm looking forward to it. I'm with the right team and the right teammates, it's a nice experience. I'm sure when we close the visor we will try to win the race."

Daytona is certainly eye-opening the first time you see it in person. TV does it zero justice.

This will be great!

What a Boss. I wish him the best. I really hope i can make it to Daytona this year.

I like Alonso and wish him and both his pre-pubescent teammates the very best!

Its even more amazing place when you race it the 1st time. You sort of feel like motorcycle wall of death. Daytona banking is the steepest I have been on.

fbb is right, place is insane the first time. I went 3 wide in Nascar 1 with 2 356's outside of me, completely freaked me out. Later reflecting upon that experience... stock cars are a lot wider than old 911's and 356's, they are insane!!!! My other "pucker" experience was when a 906 spun right in front of me going into the bus stop.

It's actually a really fun track to drive.

My first race there was 1997 and I had the BEST dices all weekend with Scotty Pheil! It was an eye-opener, and a heck of a "dyno-test."

I was browsing around and discovered that The same guy who has the track record at Lime Rock also has the record at Daytona - PJ Jones. He must have had an amazing year in 93

A really fun track to drive and race.

I hope Alonso kicks ass!

Alonso in the 23 car right now. P6 overall, nine-tenths off fast lap, after only a few laps in the car.

Hah! His lap average, over the few laps he's done so far, is quicker than Montoya!

Refreshing to see the driver's ability, as opposed to just the vehicle's capability.
+1 to sports car racing over F1
