First time on R comps - which tire?

+1. I ran this combination on my 993 for a couple of sets and it is hard to beat in dry conditions. I suggest to get a used set of rims for the track tires. If there is a lot of rain in the forecast I am going back to my street set for "track duty". NT01 can be dangerous in rain and I am still driving to the track.

Agree with general consensus on the NT-01s. I've run a fair number of different tires. These are a good choice when factoring in cost versus wear and grip.

I think the gap between the great 200 wear street tires and Nt01's has narrowed over the past five years - before that - there was a big jump from going to a Toyo RA1 - from streets. Now the 200w act like R compound - the next jump is to a set of R7 hoosiers /C51's etc.
I like the Nt01's (and R888's for that matter, Kumho Ecsta V710, etc) because they tend not to get as greasy as quickly as the 200 series tires -

Yes but it can be fun too. Once you get useed to the Rs most people find it much easier to straddle the performance envelope of any street tire. Not that the feel at the edge is all that different, it just happens at a slower speed.

True - AER runs on street tires and everyone seems to have a ton of fun.

Get 18" wheels, bypass R-comps, go to buying used slicks and treat them with Formula Vee before use. Over time you'll save big $$$ and have more fun.
BTW Anyone want to buy all my 17" CCW wheel halves

Revisiting this. I think I'd like to give the RE-71r's a try. Sizing is limited in 18" Is there a combo that works for a 987.2S? I'm thinking 245/40R18 front (.3" GREATER diameter than stock) and 275/35R18 rear (.7 inch diameter LESS than stock)
Is this ok?

It's fine as long as you get your car re-setup to hande the height change. When I switched to nt01s I had to have everything reset and have the car corner balanced again as the smaller rear tire totally changed the rake similarly to what is going to happen if you run the above combo.

Does that mean I should refrain from this setup until I've upgraded the suspension?

I ran 255/35R18 and 275/35R18 and the grip was fantastic. I have PSS9's and camber plates up front.

That would give me pause, what car are they going on? Talk to whoever does your alignment/set up work and see what they say.
