Default Porsche considering F1 engine program

I just read today that Porsche is considering entering F1 as an engine supplier when the regs change in 2021. That would be awesome as an F1 and Porsche fan. Maybe if they do first enter as an engine supplier that would lead to them fielding a works team in the future.

After watching Honda struggle for the last couple of years I wonder why any manufacturer would want to get involved?

Hopefully the new engine regs will not be as complicated as the current engine formula. I hope they ditch the entire hybrid system.... too heavy and complicated.

Agreed. So much downside and the upside is limited unless you headline the team. That said, it still beats flushing money down the Formula E pipe.

Do you really think the regs will allow the power units to be less complicated than they are now? You know that the FIA is moving towards an exclusive new world order of electric propulsion. The days of burning fossil fuels are nearly gone. This is going to be a tech R&D war. Drivers have been less of a factor in the overall win percentage as time goes on.

I would think that Porsche's experience with the power plant of the 919 would be good preparation for entering F1.

Of all the possible contenders, I think Porsche knows how to build a race engine. Their European technological base and talent pool will also help matters.

True, but you would think that Honda's experience in Indy cars would have helped them in F1... but the experience didn't seem to transfer

Honda has seemingly been lost since they came back into F1, which is odd given that they have so much R&D mojo behind them. I think they maybe have too many irons in the fire, from MotoGP, to Indy, WSBK, et al....idk, just seems strange that a factory Honda effort has failed so spectacularly for so many years in a row. It's not very Honda like, to say the least.

But to see that Porsche is seriously considering an F1 engine program, I think that is fantastic. I think that they have the resources, the technology, and what would look like potentially favorable new reg's, plus hungry teams looking for more engine options, could be a lot of upside there.
