Default Tire Trailer solutions

Been doing the track-wheel hokey pokey for a number of years now, bumming lifts for track wheels, going without from time to time, checking NOAA and the Weather network like an astraphobe.

Bit the bullet this year and bought a used Trailex tire trailer. Was already set up with the box and tire rack.

Nice rig, but that required a hitch. Willwood has sold his business to SportTows out of TX. Good folks that are fulfilling orders and intent on making a business out of this. Early days, but Sean was very helpful in getting me sorted. I upgraded to the HD version - rated for max 1,000 LBS and 70 tongue weight.

This rig runs 680 loaded, 60 lbs tongue. More with fuel from the last fuel stop distance to the track.

You think you'd be set, but mocking all this up was an eye-opener. I have no idea how the prior owner towed this behind his P car, as the tire rack was originally front mounted. Tongue weight was a non-starter.

Enter the pros at WeTune. Andrew made it his personal mission (from hell???) to re-jig the layout, reverse the floor, mount the tires rear-ward and install brackets for fuel jugs. Now well within towing specs. Sweet.

It's overkill, but what a great solution for bringing tires, tools, jack, cooler, chairs, fuel, pork shoulder, rack of lamb and stocked bar to the track. Trailex doesn't see a lot of these cause they are somewhat cost prohibitive, but I was fortunate to find one used.

Some more work to do, the Trailex tire retention plates with spring clamps are a joke. Need an upgrade there for sure.

Anyway, just wanted to share - I love reading about a good project that turns out well.

Cheers

Matt

i had a Willwood on a 986 years ago. I'm glad he sold his designs to someone. It was a great product.

Very nice, Matt - lots of sorting with a good result.
Especially glad you opted for the rack of lamb option.
You and your little trailer can sidle up to my bigger trailer any time.

That's a great setup. It looks like the nicest tire trailer I've ever seen.

This would be consistent with Matt L's approach to most things.👍

Thanks Dave. Hope to see you and your lovely bride at a track sometime soon!

You bet. Sausages are People too.

PS - will gladly share something heavy and valuable to chain it to!

Thanks Matt. Sorry I missed you in July!

No specific model number. It used to be on Trailex site, shown with a wooden (?) floor. Call Carl directly at head office and see what he says. I think it's a low volume "if you ask" item. Was glad to find it used...

Cheers

And so begins another slow journey towards what will eventually be an enclosed trailer setup. ;-)

Yeah, ask Coochas about the 10 step process. He is on step 20 at this point. Mooty appears to still be way ahead of him though.

Sigh. At this point I need a 12-step program!

He did? Who is producing them now? I need something for my 991.

I sent him many pics and measurements of my 991, sans bumper, but never heard that anything came to fruition.
