Great info, GVO.

I did know DKW eventually was assimilated into Audi.

The owner of this car had a big sign on the windshield
of his car saying 'This is NOT an Audi'

Looks like they're not following the 918 VIN convention for the
R VINs then.

BTW, I've found other photos of the Quail R that show it is one
of the #000 cars.
Sorry but I failed to take a photo of the interior ID plate. Frankly
PCNA did not let anyone get close to the R during the Quail event.
And the passenger side door was never opened. The photos of the
interior & Vin # on windshield were taken only after the event closed
...and they allowed a few of us to walk up close to the vehicle.

Rather unusual for a car show, to say the least!

About the DKW, the engine was a 3 inline (two stroke) water cooled.
..And it was also the base (same) of the engine of another car that has been more known in the US (than the DKW) : the Saab.
Well, in these modern days, and during a Monterey week that celebrates BMW, shall we not think here ..about the 3 in line (4 strokes), I mean the "B38", ..that is the provider of "power" (?) to the BMW i8 ?

About this engine (the Saab version), I took a picture of an American race car equipped with it, and this in Laguna Seca, during a prior Monterey Week. This enable to visualize this "quite strange" engine, ..and also the strange architecture of this racing car :

PS : On the Saab 96, like in the DKW, this engine was not in the "central position", but in the front of the front wheels.

Hello all!

I have been organizing group drives the last few month ranging from 10 to 30 cars each time.

Drives are early saturday mornings to avoid traffic, bicyclists and the advantage of cooler temps.

All makes and models are welcome! We've had Austin Healeys to Lotus Exige, Acura RSX to Ferrari 458 and yes some Porsches along the way

please come join us https://www.facebook.com/groups/BayAreaGroupDrives/

Drive from anywhere in the bay area to Mount Hamilton, and keep going until you hit i5 near Patterson. This road gets tight in places, but it takes you away to another land.
