Default Macan vs Audi Q5D

Ordered a Macan for May or June delivery.
Drove a Q5 diesel today. Might flip. Was impressed.
Any thoughts?

I drove a Q5 diesel a few months ago too, and was very impressed as well.

Pluses: Much better fuel economy, 20-25% less expensive, available now

Minuses: Not a Porsche, handling probably not going to be as sharp

If handling and fun at driving is your thing, then wait for the Macan. I own an SQ5, done about 90,000 km in it, so I know the car pretty well
It's a great car and I absolutely love it.... But the driving experince will be nowhere near the experience porsche offers.

The SQ5 and even more so, the Q5, understeer a lot, which isn't really fun. OTOH, it's an SUV and a car like that has in 90% of all cases a different purpose than offering superb handling. For me it's my businesscar, doing lots of km and that is where the car really shines. I've traded the SQ5 in for an Audi A6 Avant. I wanted the Macan, but since not all options are available yet and they put the wrong diesel engine in the car, I decided to get another Audi with the same diesel engine like in my SQ5.
Macan will be a great car, but more focussed on the driving experience than on practicallity or utillity.

Two different cars, for different purposes, but with a lot of overlapping features. You can't really go wrong with both.

No... That would be very nice!
They only have an SQ5 which has a 3.0 BiTurbo diesel engine in Europe 313hp (same engine is used in the FL panamera diesel). The U.S. version has 3.0 TFSI petrol engine if I'm correct.

That's the same engine as used here in the "regular" Q5 indeed, although in Europe that engine offers 258hp. I guess diesel doesn't have the popularity as it has in Europe.

My SQ5 manages to get from 0-62mph in 5.1 sec, yet it achieves an average of about 36.5 mpg. I drive easily from Switzerland to Belgium and halfway back (approx. 1250km) on one tank of diesel, with an average speed of 160-180km/h on the Autobahn.
I like diesel engines in these kind of cars. They're powerful (loads of low end torque) and are very economical at the same time. That's why I ordered the A6 Avant with the same engine. Ideal as a business car / family car/ daily driver.

yup Diesels are not as popular, however, the trend is changing slowly. I would def buy a cayenne d w/ a more powerful engine. Right now im waiting.

My guessing is that Porsche will offer the Biturbo V6 diesel on Cayenne, when the facelift arrives. Not sure when that is happening though....
It's a shame Porsche doesn't offer the Cayenne S Diesel in the US. A smooth V8 diesel with 382hp and 627lb-ft available from 2000rpm

I am waiting on the Macan diesel. The Q5 may be a good option but I am hoping for air suspension and PDK.

That is definitely one big advantage of ghe Macan indeed... Air suspension. Not available on the (S)Q5. And also the PDK is a great addition of course.

LOL! Yes it's 850Nm, so if my convertor on my iPad does its job well, it's 627lb-ft. The BiTurbo V6 makes 313 hp and 680Nm, which converts to 501lb-ft.

In Australia:

Audi SQ5 diesel: $89,999
Porsche Macan S diesel: $84,900

Audi is a bit faster, but which would you choose?

If you love a driver's car, go for the Macan. I.c.w. PDK, that 3.0 TDI engine should be a tiny bit more lively than it is in the Audi Q5. The BiTurbo diesel of the SQ5 is a beast and the Macan deserves that engine IMHO.

You can't go wrong with either car. I love the SQ5, but the Macan is a Porsche and probably feels and drives like a Porsche. Something the SQ5 can't offer you.
