They did use the turbo from the Panny S but it is detuned to only 340 hp. As far as the 3.6 N/A engine from base Panny, it doesn't have enough torque given the heavier Macan. Turbo engines are easily tuned for more torque.

340 vs. 420 appears to be a pretty big difference for just a state of tune since it appears to be the same engine. Can anybody shed any more light on this?

Also, according Porsche's website, the Macan S only weighs about 100 lbs more than a Panny S, so I'm not sure I understand the comment about insufficient torque from the NA 3.6.

New here, since I have been a BMW guy for several years now & my last P-car was a 964. But it looks like I will be ordering a Macan once the "newest thing on the block" frenzy wears off.

You get 80-100 hp&torque from just a flash. That what I got on my 996tt.

Probably majority of the difference is in the tune. Could also be a chance to the turbo/turbine setup, intercooler efficiency, constricted exhaust, etc.

I am sure it has to do with the towing rating, you need more torque for that.

Panamera is in a different class and that's it. That's why I think the Macan S is great deal for the money. Especially once the tuners get involved, you can squeeze another 50 hp easily, I hope

Something else to consider, there is talk out there that Porsche is understating the power of the Macan Turbo engine, some dude on Rennteam claims that to be in reality close to 430 hp but for marketing reasons Porsche is advertising 400 so it doesn't get too close to Cayenne Turbo.

I hope this is true for Macan S as well!

I think they only held back on the new uprated V6D for Macan diesel S to preserve their flagship turbo petrol and not upset Pana sales in the process. I'm sure you will see it surface in the Gen 2 Macan. Actually I'm surprised they didn't offer one with slightly more hp than the SQ5D just to keep it pegged but i guess the PDK gives Macan some type of advantage to offset the less power of others.

i hope we can tune the 3.0T to be like the panamera 3.0T...

considering you can make a 335 BMW faster than an M3 with a tune because of it's TT nature... i feel the macan will be the same way... tune=beast.

only problem with the tune, is that fuel consumption sky rockets. One aspect for me and deciding to move from a Cayenne Turbo to Macan would be because it cheaper to run as a DD.

Fuel consumption with a tune only changes to the degree you USE the extra power. Running more boost does not mean you are inherently increasing fueling. In many cases if you drive a vehicle normally a remap will increase fuel economy. This is especially true with turbo diesels. But yes if you go at WOT all the time you will use more fuel. But just getting a remap won't just kill your economy. Your driving behavior is what dictates that.

Most tunes usually end up with better mileage, not worse.
