Default Race chip vs Cobb

Does anyone have experience with both setups? I think I have read that Cobb is the safer system and can easily be wiped back to stock configurations. But at almost double the price, would you guys say the Cobb flash is twice as good as far as power/performance gains are concern?

thanks in advance

Over on the Macan forum it appears to be 100% Cobb. There are tuners that will combine a Cobb with a tune. I just use the Cobb and it has improved my 'S' model significantly.

I'm pulling this thread back up. The answers were vague. Does anyone have experience with the Cobb v. Racechips?

Cobb on my Macan S was absolutely amazing. Everything everybody raves about. I used racechip on my BMW and all it does is throw a CEL. I’ve sent it back twice. And still throws codes.

I have experience with Cobb from other platforms and was always quite pleased with it. The only real downside is that the dealer can see the number of ECU flashes (even after uninstalling) and so there's a smidge of warranty risk.

OK. Well, I'll go with Racechip PN: 911115. This is the +80HP GTS Black version. I'll report my results once I get it dialed in. Hopefully no CELs. I particularly like the 2 year engine warranty.

Waiting impatiently on a review of your race chip. I was also looking at Vector Tuning one as well sold on Flat6Motosports. I know Cobb is the GoTo but I can use the savings on other cool stuff.

Cobb is not presently an answer as with the new recall fix this managed to mess up the existing software and Cobb needs to address changes to make it work.

So, I received the Racechips 911115 and went to install.
  • The install instructions they sent were from a VW TSI. There was no operation manual.
  • Finding the instructions online was a bear, but I finally found a set that an owner had created (I would have attached, but it exceed the tiny 5MB limit of the forums). Still no operation manual.
  • Installation took no more than 5min and everything appears correct
  • The unit did not cause CELs
  • The online video and instructions for operation don't correspond with the display I'm seeing
  • The display is supposed to have options for Efficiency, Race and Sport. I only see 0,1,2,3,4,5,6,7
  • I do feel a difference in Sport (my guess 5?), but I want to feel the Race (my guess 7).
  • I'm getting back with support before I push that 7 button
  • The app (Racechip+) is an additional $50.00 (to work)
Once I get this dialed in, I think there is potential. I can also fine tune the box by opening the box and making adjustments, not sure if I want to do that. I might dyno it, but instead I'll use a racetrack ($35.00 if open).

For the OP, comparing RaceChip and Cobb is like doing the classic apples to oranges comparison. One is a piggyback
solution while the other is a re-flash. My understanding is that a re-flash will always provide better performance, at the
cost of being visible to the dealer.

For ImpliedConsent, I am wondering what you used to release the factory wiring connectors in order to install the RaceChip
loom.

Not my picture, but this is exactly how it's done. Pull the retaining clip, then push down on that same clip and pull.

There was confusion. I ordered Part Number 911115 - not knowing the Racechip+ App does not come with that PN. *In order to get complete functionality without drama order Racechip 911116*
==========================

I have both the Racechip and Racechip+ working and operational. There is definitely a change in the driving characteristics of the car. During all tests, the Macan setting was default (Eco). On Sport, there is a new feel of the pedal response and motor response. It increases the shift points to be more aggressive. On Race, everything changes to extreme, track-like performance. It's like placing the Macan Sport+ on steroids. So, I'm happy that all is working as intended.

I will be test the Macan on several runs in the future. I'll go progressive from 0-7 on Eco; 0-7 Sport; 0-7 Sport+. This is all 1/4mile track at roughly 6100' (Bandimere)

Update Racechip GTS Black: last week, out of nowhere while driving normal, a CEL illuminated. Racechip was in "Sport" mode. Changing modes (OFF, EFF, SPORT, RACE), recycling the vehicle, etc... did nothing to change the CEL. Pulled the Racechip, went to Porsche. They fixed the CEL citing a throttle sensor (yes, I paid for the service). I haven't reinstalled since and no CELs.

Just today started the troubleshooting with Racechip. Once I get a stable install, I'll update.

This is a common problem with Racechip for a variety of their cars. If you look at all the audi/porsche forums and online reviews about half of the customers experience CEL light sooner or later. I would go with Cobb, Softronic, or EVOMS. Pay the premium to do it right. The only piggyback system that I may try is Burger Tuning, but as far as I can tell they only have it for the 2.0T.
