I've not read anything about Macan being unreliable. Porsche makes reliable vehicles. Anecdotally, mine (Macan S) just passed the 4 year mark and had only one issue. (electronic issue a couple of years ago). Wonderful SUV.
Coincidentally, I had a base Macan loaner for several days last week when both of my cars were in for routine maintenance sequentially. Not a fan. The difference between the base engine and the S is like night and day. (My apologies to the base owners).

My 2016 S has been totally reliable for 39k miles. I have had a base (with standard wheel/tires) as a loaner during service and found it just fine for daily driver use- with enough torque low down for dealing with traffic. Compared to My S with 20 in wheels it felt anemic at higher RPM and did not handle as well when pushed. So it depends on what you enjoy and how you drive. In either case, a great driver.

We've owned our '17 Macan S for just over a year. It's my wife's car and she made the final decision between the Base & the S. Her take was the S had much more power when needed, handled much better and, yes, even she loved the exhaust sound of the S. It is her daily driver with over 12,000 miles so far and no issues. We have taken a few 1,000+ road trips and vehicle is incredibly comfortable on the highway. Recently, we were in CO and took it onto some pretty steep and rocky roads. The all wheel drive and power at elevation was outstanding. So, you can't go wrong with either car, but spring for the S if you can chin it. You'll not regret the decision. Good luck!

The back seat is small, and taller passengers might brush the headliner. At 5' 11" with a long torso, my head hits the roof. I guess it would be okay with a baby seat, but it's going to be tight. Cayenne might be a better choice for you, but the Macan was the right decision for me, despite having to adjust from my prior and very-capacious Toyota Sequoia.
Have you driven or sat in either one? If not, might be a good idea to visit your dealer with your baby seat.

We also have car seats for the grandchildren with no problem. Ours is a Turbo but I found the loaner base I had for a week to have plenty of pick up and also got good mpg.

Re the back seat: I have had four adults in the car for longer trips and had no complaints. For tallish folks, there is more headroom in front than in the back for sure.
