It is best if the dial is facing you so you can see the numbers on the dial. You may be able to make a simple angled bracket to mount the controller under the dash facing you. It would still be much smaller than a Tekonsha.
I have a question for you. In order to find the factory cable plug did you have to remove the plastic tray piece on the bottom of the dash?
