Default New base Macan owner chiming in

Howdy guys and gals, I just picked up a '17 Volcano grey with the pre. plus package and 19"s on Friday.

It was hard to find online video reviews of the base car, so I wasn't quite sure what to expect when I drove it. I was coming from an E-Golf daily (other cars are S3 and 997 C4S).

So far my first impressions are I love how it drives. Super smooth and supple when not in sport, and it has ample power. It's not what I would call 'fast' but it's not 'slow' either.

It's just a great place to be. I think for for money they are pretty good value as the fit/finish and performance is excellent. I've noticed since I've picked up mine, I'm starting to see them everywhere now.

For a point of reference I hadn't driven any of the faster ones, as I'm in Portland and we all drive slow as molasses out here anyway lol.

Welcome aboard.

Porsche is consistently selling more Macans that they are cars. IOWs combined sales of 781s, 991s and Panameras are less than Macans.

Still, at ~10k sales per year, it is low volume by "GM Standards."

I got into Porsches four years ago, starting with the phenomenally wanna-go-fast 987.2.

Got my first speeding ticket last weekend - in the Macan. (I didn't have an opportunity to name-drop Sgt Conway's mother, Dave.)

Yes, Dave, I-87, near Lake George. 80, slightly faster than everybody else, on a downhill stretch - not fair! They must be doing special enforcement in the area - I've been seeing Troopers where I've never seen them before.

I was passed by a black Macan S today - I think he made it through the gauntlet.

Thanks everyone. I know the poor-old-base doesn't get everyone's pulse racing but now on day 3 of ownership I'm starting to get to know it a bit better.

If you push hard in corners you can feel the rear anti-roll bar working hard to keep your starbucks (cup) at least level. I'm in the honeymoon period, and even though I wouldn't call it beautiful by any stretch it's starting to become at least attractive to me. I am looking back on it when I park it.

My favorite view is the side on profile where the rear factory tinted windows add some menace and match the roof rails.

My only disappoints/observations so far are that the sun visors don't extend laterally which just seems mean on this type of vehicle, and the standard brakes feel a tad under-spec'd, but this has to be just comparing to the over-braked S3 and 911 I'm sure.

No complaints about the power but on winding it out the motor didn't sound anything special, but it was refined as it rev'd through its range.

The few colleagues/neighbors/friends who've seen it so far were very impressed and it seemed like they were thinking 'I could do with one of these!' so I suspect as more people find out about the car we will start seeing a lot more on the road.

Got a wave back from another Macan owner today too - are we doing the 911 wave?

It it was two exits North of your place then it was the same place where I got nabbed and in exactly the same manner.

Congrats, they're a nice vehicle and the 2.0 has enough grunt to not feel boring.

Well add me as another new happy base owner. I've just returned from a week long 3k road trip. HAhahahah. no tickets! What a machine.

Averaged 30 mpg the first part of the trip, approximately 1200 miles, and I thought I was driving pretty hard. All the way up the west coast to the tip of Idaho. Mostly 2 lane roads with the occasional passing lane. Noticed that people really got over and let me through. No doubt the front end of the car is easily recognizable in the rear view of the car ahead of you.

The thing actually chirped the tires between 1st and 2nd the first time I got on it......

I've driven all the models except the GTS, and this is just fine for me. On the 2nd part of my trip the driving was mostly separated freeway with 80 mph speed limit and I averaged over 80 mph and 26mpg on that part of the drive.

I find that I'm really the limiter. The car wants to go faster and corner faster, I'm just not ready.....yet?

Give me an uphill curvy road and it's like a dream to drive. I'm already wondering what my next Porsche will be?

Thanks! I want to drive a 6 cylinder....but don't at the same time as I'll probably want one haha.

I drove the Base, S, and the Turbo in quick succession on the same circuit. What I noticed was how the power came on and the smoothness of that power. With each upgrade in power, the car got up to speed quicker and smoother.

I also noticed how bad *** the Turbo sounded when it started. It rumbled. My wife and I kind of looked at each other and the salesman said in some European accent, (think Arnold Swartzneger) "it's letting you know it's a Turbo"

We busted up laughing and sure enough the thing quieted right down after a minute or 2.

I saw a youtube video of the base racing on the track with the other 2 models and it was right there with them.
