Macan GTS versus 944 Turbo
This is very entertaining. I'm glad they didn't choose one of my old cars for the comparison. Written up in the new Panorama, too.

Not even a bit surprised. The Macan is really good.
It holds its own when stacked up against today's 'sporty' cars:

Sigh
Congratulations. The Macan, and a GTS if that, beat an old tired softly sprung stock 944 Turbo. Wouldn’t an 944 Turbo S M030 been more of an even comparison? I’ll let you be the judge.

Sigh.
You are missing the point. The point is NOT about putting down any model of the 944. It is about pointing out how good is the Macan and how 25+ years of technological advance has affected both objective measures and perception baselines.

I recall a trip in a friend's old Century wood boat, crossing Torch Lake (Michigan) on a windy day. The boat was smashing and bashing through the waves, sounding like it might turn to splinters at any moment, forcing a conscious effort to keep my tongue away from my teeth. The devoted owner said "Fiberglass boats just don't ride like these old boats."
True, but not the way my friend intended. I'd have preferred a solid, deep V hull that day.
The point is that nostalgia can overcome rational judgement. The judgement that should be applied to the product of older technology is historical, the appreciation for what could be done at that time with the tools available, and relative to contemporary efforts. The ultimate praise is "ahead of its time."
On the other hand, a comparative review like the one I linked could be regarded as fundamentally wrong, contrary to the proper spirit of automotive appreciation. It may unnecessarily shatter harmless beliefs. It does not tell "the better story" as promoted by "The Life of Pi".
