I have just ordered a new inner from BBS in Georgia. If anyone needs help on their BBS wheels, Eric at 770-967-9574 is extremely helpful. They have all the parts available for 996 wheels. Apparently my wheel is the E29. The E28 has a magnesium center, the E29 is aluminum center. The part number for the center of the wheel is 0229052 and is quite heavy apparently. The 0229021 center is for the earlier 996 cup version with smaller brakes. Part number 0288130 can replace my centers, has 5 lug holes, and is 3 lbs lighter, so many use these centers for gen II cups.

Isn't the 0288130 an E88, with Mg center?

Here is the text of his email to me:
"Your wheels are technically an E29. They look a lot like the E28 cast magnesium centers but are actually aluminum forgings like our current E88, however they have minimal machining and are quite heavy. Yours are 0229052 (not to be confused with the earlier 996 Cup 0229021 that look the same but have 5mm less flange height / brake room). Suitable replacements for your current centers are:
0228291 also has lug holes and increases offset by 2.5mm but many people have used them
0288109 E88 forged aluminum version replacement for the 0228291 – stronger and not any heavier
0288236 Like the 0288109 but 1mm more flange height - only 1.5mm higher offset than the 0228291.
0288274 Like the 109 but shallower lug holes, not that it really matters. There are a lot of these around.
All of these mount the rims behind the center and don’t give up any brake room even though the offset is higher.
0288130 Directly replaces the 0229052 but also has lug holes. About 3 pounds lighter each! E29 are tanks.
0207032 Center lock only seven spoke 997 RSR type look and within one mm of the 0229052. This is the lightest at 3.3 pounds each less than the factory stuff but not many have been sold."
Again, I have a 2002 cup car which has the bigger brake calipers than the earlier 996 cups.

Thank you for the confirmation! I thought I had correctly decoded the first part of the numbering convention for the centers, but I found very little talk of E29. The additional information about material, weight, and offset is appreciated.

Hi All,
From a different post:
Not sure where I got this stuff, but thought it would be good to share.
AND: 0288311 / 0288359 is the replacement center for 0228200
