Guys, I'm a long time lurker here with no actual experience with cup cars and my questions show that! As the thread title suggests I have a couple of questions about tubs.
1. How common is for a Cup car to have been re-tubbed? Does that affect the value?
2. Is re-tubbing last resort that is only used when traditional crash repair methods just don't do it. Is re-tubbing ever done for reasons other than severe crash (material fatigue?)?
3. Are tubs available for older models (996,993,964)?

The answer to number 3 with reapect to 996's is No. generally, a retub is a bonus.

1. I think (and that's just a guess) that about 75-85% of all Cups have had a retub over the time. A new and fresh tub is always a bonus!

2. Sometimes it's last resort, sometimes it's done because there isn't enough time to properly repair a crashed car between two weekends, sometimes it's done because of material-fatigue (but that only applies for RSR's). We did it also because we wanted the car to be 100% again. Even if it wasn't absolutely necessary.

3. As already stated above: New tubs are just available for 997 and 991 Cups. And the supply for the 997 will end sooner then later.

Thanks! So if one has a bad crash with an older car they just have to go through a lengthy old school repair? I guess there are crashes that are bad enough so that the tub can never be properly repaired. Do guys just don't drive the older cars as hard?

Keep in mind that it is very easy to repair an "older" steel car in comparison to an aluminum car that cannot just be bent back into shape.

Regarding the 996 Cup; as I understand it complete tubs have not been available for about 5 years but individual parts/sections can still be ordered from Motorsports. Maybe someone else can confirm this?

IMHO a re-tub is a bonus...It's just another "wear item"...why not have a new one as opposed to a stressed out and beat up old one ?

I think that for reasons of drivability and maybe ease (or cost) of repair, a re-tub may well be an advantage. But for reasons of collectability, it's not so clear. That is, if these cars ever become collectable.

They're a C4 tub to begin with so you can find a straight one and cage it....
