I had an interesting lecture yesterday from someone at Simpson (they are also the owners of HANS and inventors of the new hybrid system)
He told me 90% of the seats are not functioning well enough due to wrong fitment.
For me it came down to 2 major points. The hip belt needs to be able to support the pelvis and not your stomach. Meaning most hip belt wholes are to high in the seat. they actually should be much lower. Secondly the 5th and 6th whole is most of the time too far away from the driver. This whole should be more back. It's also very important the 5th and 6th belt are going to left and right and are not connected to one point. That would practically make it a 5 point harness and therefore very dangerous. This will cause the driver to slide forward. Even sliding forward slightly has already a devastating effect on the result. By going down, your HANS device will not work properly and even become dangerous. It can even hurt your chest / ribs.
So getting a seat that fits perfect might be the biggest challenge.
Anything that is too loose, no matter how good the materials is a waste of money and very dangerous

+1 on the Hendrick seat. The only practical downside depending on car and driver (but a key point for safety) being it gets hard mounted into the chassis. And its heavy.
The new Recaro seat and slider looks really good.

He told me Race Tech has good seats and also because they are one of the few who offer a connection between seat and rear roll bar which he sees as a very good development.

10.000$ in the US? That is some serious money!
Isn't it cheaper if you buy it for 6.000$ here and import it? Does someone know what taxes will be added?

5th Gear
OMP is great. personally though, i only use Recaro with the HAlos. i think their halos are thicker and closer to the helmet. the seat fits me better and i like the angles better. i read some review maybe about 18months ago talking about the strength of seats, and the recaro if i recall came out on top.
OMP is great, but i always change the OMP cup seats for the recaros.

A note to everyone. The new Recaro is the only seat ATM that's approved with sliders by the new 8862-2009 standard, all others need to be bolted directly to chassie via its own specific side mounts. So if you need adjustability, that's the only one to have, otherwise all others are also good.
The new standard is a huge difference, the new seats are much safer. It's unreal how much a seat from the old standard can flex sideways in a crash when you see it, new ones are much much stiffer. I've actually seen inboard films of rolls where the head basicly goes out the side window, while still within the halo.
Also the sliders that are OEM on all previous cups, before the 991, are very questionable from a safety point... While you're at it, check your groin belt attachment in the floor vs your actual placement in the car while driving. Very questionable...
It's a big step in safety on the 991, but much can be implemented on the old ones too. Be safe out there!
