997 CUP Ball Joint Failure
 

Just an FYI to those that have 997 Cups.

I recently bought lower front control arms from PMNA. Come to find out, there has been some failures and subsequently, a bulletin was issued. Haven't been able to get the new updated part.

Parts will be available soon but not as of a few ago when I checked.

Still not available. Getting a bit irritated with Porsche.

Unfortunately I don’t have an update for you regarding ETA of the replacement bearing journals and nuts. They still haven’t become available in Germany.

Frustrating to say the least, had to send 3 requests to get the following response from PMNA which is unacceptable considering the front suspension could fail due to a defective part. You would think Porsche would put more urgency in this and keep these parts in inventory when you consider how many 997 cups were sold. Below is the answer I got after a week of slow answers, BTW, I was told this replacement applies to all 997 cups.

"Thank you for your email. I’m sorry we were not more clear. The parts are currently on backorder and we do not have an accurate estimate as to when they will arrive.
Industry standard in this situation is to tell the customer 8-10 weeks. However, we try to refrain from telling customers any ETA unless we know it to be accurate.
As soon as we know and actual ETA we will let you know. We appreciate your patience while we wait.

If the 997 RSR had pin length of 72,76 or 80mm, what is this one? Also how is that measured, end to end?

What is the part # for that pin? I am trying to figure out if this is the same as the ones used in the RSR.

I will get you the number but I have RSR control arms in my car and the ones I got for it originally were the defective ones.

Germany has told us they have no ETA for more of those bearing journals to send us so we are working on other solutions to try and get these parts to you.

I will let you know more next Tuesday or Wednesday.

I have received 10 sets of the RSR LCAs in the last two months. They all have the new style trunnion pins (version "P") with a June '19 manufacture date.. The pins are longer with a more gradual taper near the threads in order to reduce the stress riser in that area. As a result, they require the substantially taller new design nut. The new trunnion pins are all 87mm long but the offset is the same as the old style 76mm pins which is the standard default length. The extra length is due to the design change detailed above. The shorter 72mm and the longer 80mm trunnion pins are still the same old design but they are NOT subjected to the recall. Only the "H" model of the old trunnion pin is subject to the recall which would point to the fact there was probably a material issue with the H versions instead of an underlying design issue. NO clear answer from PMNA however and I've chatted with them at length about it. Cheers.

Sorry about resurrecting this thread from the dead but what are the torque specs for the top nut and the bottom torx bolt? I assume the bottom torx bolt gets blue loctite. Please correct me if I am wrong. I cannot locate this info in my manual.

I am also interested as I have a 997 Cup incoming.

Is it the case that if my car has the shorter nut that I likely have an old pin style and they should be swapped out?

I did verify the top nut of 75 Nm in the 2011 997.2 manual, but didn't find the bottom torx head anywhere else.
