Steel lower control arms? GTC3 and GTC2

From the 2019 PCA Racing Rules: "GTC2 and GTC3 cars are allowed to replace the pressure-cast aluminum control arms with steel control arms of identical dimensions."

Is anyone selling steel lower control arms?

bgiere 02-25-2019 04:13 PM

My car has the steel Fabcar arms on it. Not sure if Dave Klymm still makes them or not.

Dave closed Fabcar in 2014.

I wonder if anyone else wants to make these approved replacement parts. I was surprised to see the PCA rule allowing steel because factory parts are readily available.

We have 997 Forged lower control arms available if needed

Don't look GTC3 legal.

I have a pair of the fabcar arms I am willing to part with if someone is interested.

This is interesting. I can look into this. But, is it really the pressure cast arms that are the issue, or is it that the pin breaks after a period of time.

We changed our car to the Cup S control arms which have a separate pin from the control arm all together. This way we can keep the control arm and change out the pin. And, the Cup S pin is a stronger (more durable) part.

Thanks
Ed

Maybe it's time to propose a GTC2/3 rule change to allow that modification. If the steel replacement was OK despite the OE part remaining available, perhaps this would also, provided the geometry is the same and no advantage produced.

Ed, is the part otherwise the same?

I think he's talking about the trunnion pins on the RSR LCAs. It's made out of Vascomax which is a high strength 300M vacuum remelt steel. PM has these available in 3 lengths (72/76/82mm) which allow you to fine tune the roll centers. I've been using these on all 4 corners for many years with success.

Yes, thanks. This is what I am talking about.

Thanks

So which of the 3 pins that PM/PMNA offers would maintain "stock" roll centers if we were to obtain agreement from Walt & Co. about this kind of change?

76mm pin gives you the same geometry as the Cup arms.

Can the factory cup control arms be modified to accept these pins? I also have a tough time believing the arm itself would actually fail.
