996 Cup too much for DE/racing?
#46
I can see the whole frustration about clean laps when racing at a club DE with street cars in some cases as some of the other guys mentioned. But it is a club DE event and is intended to be more educational than competitive. Just have to consider what it is, and expect just that. There are always the other more competitive events to go all out on.

I recently took my 996 Cup to VIR for a PCA DE event and it was great. The red instructor group has open passing (with a point by) so getting fast, clean laps was easy. The reality is the newer GT cars are ridiculously fast so it's not like there are huge speed differentials for cars that were at this event. I haven't done a DE in awhile so it was a nice break from doing a race.

I DE'd my 996 cup a few times a year when helping wth our local clubs DE in addition to club racing. I would say go for it. I have a 2010 GT3, and the cup makes that car feel like a boat on the track. I've had the GT3 over 5 years, and have tracked it only once. At a DE pace, I think a 996 cup would be reasonable to run. And, the cup is much safer with a full cage and safety equipment...

The problem of doing DEs with a 996 cup is that you will never drive it closer to the limit!!!! It will be relatively fast and the driver will feel great but the car will be underdriven at DEs. At the limit, it is blindingly quick, only 1s or off 997 cup times, and scary!

Our DEs are actually pretty quick especially in the Race group. I’ve ran with them for the past 5 years and everyone shows up with something faster each year. It’s wheel to wheel racing so the point buys are not a concern and even when stepping down into the A-class DE it’s still open pass.
Im trying to make an offer(s) this week on a Cup- in the interim I’m wondering If something like this well built Cayman currently for sale. Suspect lap times are similar as are maint?? https://rennlist.com/forums/vehicle-...-h-i-gtb1.html
6Cup vs Cayman?

Bunch of tough love on this board, agree and know they are getting harder to find. I have two in mind and in discussions and would love to pull something off over the holidays and start building up the spares/support needs. Hope I can report back soon with details

Is one able to finance a cup car? I would love to buy one but done have the extra cash laying around,
sorry to highjack with a question but I have been wondering it for a while.
for what it is worth, last time at NJMP for a DE, there were quite a few 996 cup cars.
DO IT!

Since it's not a registerable and insurable vehicle you can't get auto financing in California. You could get a personal loan, or a HELOC that you could then likely deduct the interest from.
