Default 996 cup oil pressure

I have noticed the factory oil pressure gauge on my 2003 996 cup shoots up to 5 bar when the car is started and run at idle. Out on track it hovers between 5 and just below 5 bar. I remember my road going GT3 would idle at 2 bar (lower idle engine speed) and peg at 5 bar after about 3K RPM. I have not had the chance to configure my motec dash to log oil pressure but will check this and get a log.

Where should the oil pressure be?

It should vary with load and engine speed. You will be able to create a graph in i2, with RPM Vs Throttle load Vs Oil pressure. Drop an e-mail if you want a screenshoot from my former 08 997 cup (nearly same engine).

Default high oil pressure reading continues...

updating this thread. I have since had my shop fiddle with the wiring to the oil pressure sender which did not help. I then replaced the oil pressure sender with a new part and still the oil pressure is reading 1116 kpa (161 psi) which is the maximum value in the motec logger.

Is it realistic for the oil pressure to actually be this high? If it were, what issues would this present for the motor? If not an electrical issue, could a stuck oil pressure relief valve cause such a reading? It is worth noting that I have driven the car twice since this issue first presented and there haven't been any problems, but I don't wish to push my luck. I have a track day this weekend and trying to assess whether or not I should run the car...

Any input is welcomed.

Never mind, I have hooked up a mechanical gauge and the pressures are normal throughout the rev range. Must be a wiring issue.

Can someone with a 996 cup please do me a favor and tell me what their factory oil pressure gauge reads at idle with engine up to operating temperature? Mine is reading just below 5 bar at 2100rpm (idle). I’d like to know if this is a normal reading for the gauge. I have run a mechanical gauge on my car as mentioned above which gives normal readings so not concerned about the engine. I realize the factory gauge doesn’t tell you much unless you have zero oil pressure, but stuff not working correctly bothers me so I’d like to know whether or not I’m imagining a problem with the gauge.

Thanks

I ll do it next time I take the car out i.e. when the rear brakes finally are fixed.
Out of memory my oil pressure readings behave the same as yours i.e. always on the high side, drops a bit below 5 when "coasting" on track at 5 as soon as I fire her up and stays high even when the engine is at operating temp and idling.
I have always thought the high idle oil pressure is linked to the fact that the car's idle RPM is so high.
On "street" GT3s the idle is much lower allowing the oil pressure to drop.

Hovers just below 5 at operating temperature. Full 5 at cold start.

Thanks for that. This is more or less what mine does but I always forget to check it when I’m actually at the track with the car up to full operating temp. The temp never gets there just idling in the driveway for a few mins here and there. My mechanical gauge told me 4.2 bar after about 10 mins of idling from cold so I guess the dash is around the mark. Correct re: the street GT3, mine would always hover around 2 bar at just under 1000 rpm idle, I guess that extra 1000 rpm on the cup makes a big difference.

Thanks, mine is pretty well the same.

All if this paranoia started when I tried to log oil pressure with the motec and it was giving max readings of 11 bar, then I realized my motec does not have a sensor in place for oil pressure at all. Duh!

Checked on a video from last year, all correct. Idles 4,5 or so after a stint.
