First Day In 15 991 Cup
Want to share my experiience from the first day in my new 15 991 Cup supplied by KL. I'm storing the car at MSR in Cresson TX with on track support from Topp Racing. I hired Eric Foos to help get me up to speed and work on the plethora of things I do wrong. It was a cold day, started at 28 and high of 45, not typical Dallas weather.
Key observations:
The 991 makes gobs of torque allowing me to short shift far more than my 997 Cup
Brakes seem more forgiving regarding lock up compared with 997, sensor on dash certainly helps
You can certainly feel the jump in aero and grip
Having spent the last 6 years in a 996 and 997 Cup made day 1 relatively easy. Difference between 991 and 997 is far larger than 996 to 997
Rear end was a bit more temperamental than my 997 but overall handling seems far better. Small changes with the wing made a difference.
New Pirelli DHC rears wore far quicker than predicted. Wear was even for both rears but way faster than the DH compounds I have experience with, fronts we're fine. Set up was checked and nothing was out of norm. Hope this is not the new norm with DHC compound. Curious if others have expericiened this rate of wear with DHC compounds?
Loved the paddle shifters and although I thought I'd miss using a shifter, I didn't. The paddles on the 991 are great
Cosworth data system has tons of data and both Eric and Todd made working with it easy.
Overall, day 1 was great and the guidance from Eric was invaluable to help gett up to speed

Were you out running it on Friday? Just curious. I saw 2 991 cups on track the session before I made it out. Curious what times were you seeing?
I've been running 1:14's in my 997.2 cup and broke into my PB Friday with a 1:13.4.

Wow that is great. First day of many happy days to come. I have tried to tell people the diff going 996-997 Gen 1 was ok. Nothing earth shattering. Gen 1 to Gen 2 was a reasonable increase in power and handling. Before I will say the changes going from one platform to another was evolutionary. Took what you had before, made it a little better. The 991 is an revolutionary step forward. Not in just shear performance alone, but in the extra thought Porsche put into all the suspension, brakes, etc. Congrats again and have FUN!!!!

We we had lap times in 1:13's, best I believe was 1:13 flat. The time on track was more for car setup and my improving overall driving. Lap times were not a major focus this trip.

Rich, it's an addiction..... I keep telling myself when the car I own sells it'll be replaced a far more financially feasible platform. Then another great deal comes along that's irrestible. Now that my sons racing the next move will be SP3 and do some father/son racing.

Awesome and congrats! My own experience: the 991 requires more finesse on the brakes. The pedals lighter and that makes it more sensitive to modulation. I miss the physicality of the 7's sequential though.

man, that was a great feeling. and while i hate the comfort, heaven bless that add-on blipper advice. but those flappy paddles on the newer stuff...magnifico....so nice.
and while i love the rawness of no abs, I'm surprised the cup car series hasn't gone to it. cant really moan about keeping costs down since I'm sure Porsche could strong arm bosch, or flip over to teves ala Motec flip to Cosworth, and get a set up for a couple of grand per car.
its just a great device in motorsport spec those bosch and teves abs systems are wicked good.
