Default Are these the Stock Wheels on a 2006 Cayman S ?

This pic is from a sales listing for a 2006 Cayman S.

Name: Custom Cayman S 2006 side view.jpg
Views: 15947
Size: 56.7 KB

The wheels are described as being " 19" Carrera S Wheels "

The VIN lookup and the Monroney Label (side sticker) state that the car has "403 19" Carrera S Wheel" as optional equipment, at a cost of $1550 (US).

I looked up the 403 wheel and it looks nothing like what is on the car, it looks like what I have seen in other sales listings for Cayman S vehicles.

To my eye it is a much nicer looking wheel; I like it.

Under standard equipment it says the car has

"8x18 Alloy Wheels with 235/140ZR 18" tires" in the front, and

"9x18 Alloy Wheels with 265/40ZR 18" tires" in the rear.

To my knowledge, you cannot safely mount 18" tires on 19" rims.

Would this wheel have been purchased later and put onto the car, or could the car have been ordered this way? Would the side sticker/option list show this as a "403 19" Carrera S Wheel" in that situation?

Or, perhaps, does the reference to the 19" Carrera S Wheel refer to the steering wheel and not the tire rims?

Thanks,

ken

They look like 19in Sport Design wheels. I believe they were optional on 987 Cayman/Boxster. Perhaps they were swapped at some point. The 19in Carrera S wheels at that time were the so-called "lobster fork" wheels. For the Cayman they have a different offset than the 911. Always liked the sport design wheel. Yes you can only mount 19in tires on those 19in wheels.

I'm thinking that perhaps the original purchaser of the vehicle may have done a swap of some sort with the selling dealer before taking possession of the vehicle. I was told that the car was supplied like this from the dealer originally, which seems to conflict with the window sticker.

I think that dealers do that sort of thing from time to time, to clinch a sale.

thanks,

ken

Those are 19" Sport Design wheels which were an option on the '06.
I have 19" Sport Designs on my '06 too, although just as in your situation my build sheet and option codes both show that a different wheel was fitted from the factory. In my case 19" Carrera Classic wheels.

True that, and I would prefer to have those 18" wheels on my '06 instead. I like the classic 5-spoke look and I don't like the larger 19" size of the Sport Designs.

Thanks for everyone's comments.

I am assuming that with those 19" sport wheels that there is only one size of tire that fits the fronts, and one size that fits the rears, and those are the tire sizes you pull up when you go to, for example, the Tirerack website and after putting in the year and model (2006 Cayman S) and indicating that you have the 19" wheels.

I like the way the sport wheels look.

What I don't like is that sports cars with staggered wheels typically have very limited choices when it comes to finding tires that will fit. Normally speaking, I would put Michelin PSS tires on a car like this and not give it a second thought, however a decent pair of summer-biased all seasons could also be an option, but the choices appear to be extremely limited.

I believe all of the major tire mfgs make tires in the proper sizes for the 19" wheels on our 987. Michelin PSS and their new PS4, Continental DW (and a new version coming out shortly), Pirelli, and a few other mfgs all make the 235mm front and 265mm rear sizes for the 987.
Actually, if you want to read about tires to your heart's content, there are several tire related threads you can search out with many opinions, options, and experiences shared.

Spokayman, let me know if you would like to trade wheels. I've been looking to upgrade to 19" and have the original 5 spokes in good condition.

Will you include a set of cinder blocks to hold the car up while awaiting receipt of your wheels? :-)

Well, I just put new tires on so I think I'm committed to these for awhile.
