Default occasional puff of smoke on cold starts

I have a 2009 987.2 Cayman with 30,000 miles - and occasionally i will get a puff of oil smoke at start up -- This has happened 4 times over the past three months and the car is driven daily - It just passed smog in California last week. It seems to run perfect with no residue in the exhaust.. The car is not using oil.

Has anyone experienced this or something similar.

Default Normal

I have been told and have seen on posts that this is normal and comes from some residual oil in the cylinders after shutting the engine off and the car sitting. Mine doesn't do it every time I start up but does occasionally. It just sat for two weeks and when I stated it up it didn't do it. I have an '08 2.7 Cayman with 30k miles on it. If it was doing it every time and excessively then it might be the air oil separator. Do some more searching here and other Porsche forums.

Sounds normal. A little smoke at startup is normal for boxer engines.

This seems to be common with many Porsches. I've seen it in my Cayman, my 944 Turbo and my old 928. Typically for me, it happens when the car has been sitting for an extend time but not always. It does seem more common during cold weather.

Certainly my old BMW r100 boxer engine would do it. If the motorcycle sat on the side stand, oil would pool in the left cylinder and have to purge in a fart of smoke.

I guess that it's better to be over-lubricated than under. [That's what she said?]

Thank you for the note -- I won't worry about it!

they do it and it can be embarrassing at times. Do not believe the tinkerbells that advise you to idle for 2 minutes before shutting off or park on a 9 and a half degree angle my wag is oil getting past rings or the AOS empties out every so often. i bought mine new in 09 and it still does it and i use no oil

Maybe she is sensitive - has smoked at all since my post -- Thanks for the input.
