Looking to add a Cayman S as a DE / eventual track car
Ahhh, the insanity begins again. I currently have an '09 911 Turbo that we only drive a couple of thousand miles a year and has not yet been on the track.
I would like to get more into track days and possibly eventual club racing. I have considered the "normal" 944 route that many seem to take but I am also seriously considering a Cayman as an option. I have driven both a 987 (Autobahn through Porsche Travel Club) and a 981 (Porsche Precision school) and enjoyed both a great deal.
So, this leads me to the budget / 987.1 or .2 question. I have seen several interesting .1 cars that have had many of the reliability mods for track work already done but have yet to pull the trigger. I have also considered a .2 car but would like to be about $40k all in. Many of these are still in the 45-50k range.
I am in Ohio and will not need the car until the spring so there is little rush but OCD is starting to kick in and a choice will likely be made soon.
Anything else I need to consider? Where is the best sweet spot at this point for value vs performance?
Thanks,
Derek

I have never driven one on the track but if you go to the Racing/Competition forum you will see that there is a whole new class of PCA Spec racing being started using the 987.1. Something to consider if your ultimate goal is to race. 987.2 S cars are hard to find below $40k in stock form.

The general wisdom is 987.2 is better for track/DE due to the improved oiling in the 9A1 motor. But as noted above, if considering club racing the new SPC class is for 987.1. If I were starting into the addiction and reasonably certain about future club racing I would go 987.1 and do the mods for reliability early. There are also Caymans in GTB so may be worth looking into that too. I started in a 987.2 Cayman R and thinking about SPB and SPC.

I've had both. I decided to not track my 987.1 and bought a .2 for DE. Given the price differences, .1 or .2 is a personal risk decision. Here are three links that will help you decide:

Thanks guys. Probably leaning toward a .2 with the right options.
On the surface, it looks like PASM could be very desirable in this situation but limits the selection significantly.
It seems like Sport Chrono is less important for a 6 speed car but important for a PDK one.

The '05 997.1 in the classifieds for 38k is tempting as well. Thought I was set on a Cayman but the early 997 cars are getting close in price and have an appeal as well.

I read these threads and consider myself extremely lucky. I hope you can find the right car.
I am overjoyed to have an 09 Cayman S with PASM, LSD, SSK, full leather and Turbo II 19" wheels. And of course that lovely 9A1 motor. She loves the shorter technical tracks! I only wish it had PSE, but lots of exhaust options out there.

Great car, congrats! Looks like you got a good deal given the mileage and track mods already done. I picked up my 06 Cayman S in October and love it. Given I’m now starting to do all the mods for DE work that you are starting with I’m a bit jealous! Hope you enjoy it on the track.

Ended up with this one: https://rennlist.com/forums/vehicle-...rack-prep.html I will pick her up Tuesday.
If you plan to track it often, I would recommend installation of a power steering cooler, under drive pulley and the Motorsport AOS. There are also some very cheap front GT3 brake cooling deflectors that (if not installed yet) are great value for the cost.
