2009 Base Cayman 2.9L/Cayman S Transmission

Ratios are slightly different. (basically the same) The S has a larger ring/pinion set and a matching larger case. The S also has larger diff flanges and bigger axle shafts and joints. All the parts are interchangeable. Why do you ask?

I am 99% sure the diff's are the same for the S and base. We put GT diffs in both our ST class 2.9l caymans. In my opinion Guard Transmission is the best choice for a lsd.

Base Cayman LSD is same as all previous 6spd. The new S gearbox has an oil pump drive gear that has mandated a revised design. We will be releasing it shortly. But that won't matter to a 987.2 like yours.
I like the base model gearing better because of the shorter 2nd.

Thanks coryf/gtgears for your replies.
I was just checking the grand-am ST rule book and they never mantioned about which tranny to use, it only said OEM (I assume stock base model cayman.) But, WC rulebook shows that Cayman S tranny is allow. What is the disadvantage of keeping my base cayman tranny vs cayman S?

PWC cars are Cayman S (not sure if they run 3.8 motor or stock 3.4l but you could probably get an answer on Cayman Register)
the Continental ST class run 2.9l Cayman

There's Caymans in both GTS and TC in World Challenge. CoryF will be driving one in TC this weekend. He was really fast today and I think put the car on outside pole in qualifying.

Out at COTA today, spoke with a Cayman-running team.
According to them:
PWC allows cars to run the "S" (3.4 l) transmission with the 2.9 engine.
IMSA requires cars to use the 2.9 transmission.

If that's the case, does the S tranny bolt on the 2.9L???
Or, they took the internals out and put into the 2.9 tranny case.
Very interested at this point. Someone should really go and find out the real deal is.
Caymans rock in WC qualify, 1st 2nd and 4th.

Sorry, I was thinking 2010 was the start of 987.2. Your 2009 engine will bolt to an S tranny. Though I still don't see the point in spending $10k to do it.
