Any 981 owners have rattles from rear hatch?
I hear this was a problem in the 987 that somehow carried over to the 981 platform. About 32% (n=25) of 981 owners on Planet 9 admitted they had a rattle from the rear hatch.
I was wondering what the experience was like here on Rennlist.

YES!!! Drives me F-ing insane! I thought it was the little rubber bumpers at the rear of the hatch - lubed them - no change. Lubed the other rubber bumper pieces on the sides of the hatch - no change. Thought it might be the rear spoiler rubbing on the edge of the hatch but it still does it when the spoiler is raised. I give up....

None here. I do have to crack the passenger window, though, when driver window is down in order to avoid a supremely annoying "buffeting" (?) sound from the rear compartment.

Not exactly sure RVEx. I have only read about the problem, and I do not own a Cayman. Most say that it's a "rattle" or "clunk". No one has said it sounds like a bell. I wonder what that is? Does it come from the rear compartment?

Yeah it comes from right behind the seats, higher up though not low in the hatch. To be fair, I haven't yet investigated it, I just saw this thread and thought maybe it was the same thing others have experienced.

I've since read on Planet9 that an owner had a similar noise and had the shock replaced under warranty. Not sure I want to go that route yet (sometimes ripping apart a new car unintentionally causes another issue). So far the noise is being contained with the windows up and it's not heard entering from the outside when they're down. If the noise gets worse or the car's handling becomes affected, then I'll take it in.

Hi Cowhorn
My daily driver is a 2014 base Cayman and it had very annoying rattles from the rear hatch. It took 2 trips to Park Place in Dallas to remedy the problem - which they did. I believe they had to install additional insulation - but it is a fixable issue.

Three Wheelin'
Mine rattles, too. There is a thread on planet-9 that details several ways to try to fix. I've tried two out of three most common ones but to no avail. It's not that loud and the music usually covers it so I can't hear it, although I'd like to "cure" it.....

I'd describe the noise as a metal-on-metal thud...the type that would make your teeth and filings hurt if it was louder or closer or you bit on it. My 2014 Cayman S seems to do this at low speed randomly.
I would swear it's chassis flex causing part of the metal and glass hatch to contact the surrounding body frame. But then I think Porsche made the Cayman much more rigid than that, and it couldn't be due to flex.
Something similar happened in my 2005 M3 years ago and BWM applied a Teflon tape around the door frame to quiet the noise. Wonder if that would assist with this.... ?!?!?!

I've got it on my new 981 GTS. I believe it is coming from the "parcel" shelf were it attaches to the rear hatch just below the window. The spring clips don't appear to hold it tightly in place and I could see it vibrating in the rear view mirror over poor road surfaces. Drive on a flat surface and it disappears. I've just put in a couple of foam rubber O ring washers to cushion where the two plastics surfaces have contact around the locking pins so will see it that helps.
