I know very little about PDK. I know that PDK has two fluids. My understanding is that the cooler is for the differential fluid...I don't think it cools the pdk clutch oil.

until the 981, the cooler cools the wet clutch side of of the PDK. it does not cool the diff/gear side. the 981 has a cooler for each side. some of us have added coolers to the diff/gear side. mine is an air/fluid exchanger. (the above statement references how the cars came OEM)

Beautiful car and great build with Chris building the race car!
Once that car is completed you will be very happy.

The balance of a mid engined car like your build in conjunction with the X51 engine you will have so much fun versus a GT3........you need plastic surgery to remove the wrinkles from smiling!

I'm envious congrats. Keep up the photos

Joe:

I am building a CS and am using a fabspeed muffler and headers. it will also have a GT3 TB and an IPD plentum. Any idea on HP gain when all of those things are combined?

Close to a 40hp gain on headers no cats and Maxflo mufflers and a quality intake system
The factory 987 and 987.2 intake system can be replaced for great gains and sports car sound.

Default PDK Durability

It is time for me to upgrade my track car and I am thinking about making the switch to a Porsche Cayman S. How is the PDK transmission holding up under track conditions? If no issues for you specifically have you heard of any issues with the PDK? I have heard with BMW's (which I have driven in the past) the twin clutch is hard on the engine and prone to failure and was wondering if that is true for the PDK. Durability of the car is more or less my #1 requirement with my new track car. BTW Chris Smith is an awesome guy and a great car builder so I am sure you will continue to love your new toy! Appreciate any help you can give. Thanks

I have heard of no issues with the PDK with regards to reliability. Cooling it under track/racing conditions seems like the prudent thing to do. Many of the PDK builds are relatively new.

When you say cooling it under track conditions do you mean adding cooling system to pdk or taking it easy for a lap? Taking it easy for a lap is a poor option to me because if you consistently take it up to temps it can't tolerate it will break down in no time like the bmw's do. Racers keep telling me there are no non-manual trans that can stand up to constant track use and I was hopeful to hear some real world experience with the pdk. Appreciate all of your input!

Porsche added additional pdk cooling in 987.2 cars. Track cars add even more gearbox cooling. Slow laps are not an option!

Slowing down during a race is not an option!!!! lol

I'm referring to adding additional cooling; adding a air to oil cooler for the LSD with fan and perhaps adding or enlarging the PDK clutch cooler.

Jason,

I guess this is why I never heard back from you after sending out the estimate and multiple emails to build this car. I really wish we had gotten the opportunity to build it. Good luck with it. Next time please drop me a 1 sentence email that you found someone to build you a car. Had I known that I was donating time, information and parts to Chris with no markup whatsoever, on a car that someone shopped around and passed us over to build 5 hours from here, I think I honestly would have responded differently, albeit inappropriately.

John

P.S. I was the biggest naysayer of PDK race-track funcionality until I proved myself wrong. The PDK transmission cooler has been tested; it survived a 3 hour enduro at Sebring in July when it was 90 degrees ambient and I was the driver for hours 2 and 3 so I had a front row seat. PDK is reliable. It never downshifted when I did not want it to, it never upshifted when I didn't want it to do so. It never limped on me. If you don't believe it, call the only people that have real-world Cayman PDK professional endurance racing experience and we can discuss. It would be difficult convincing however, me that a 3 hour Sebring enduro in the dead of summer with the bumps, upshifts and downshifts, is not a sufficient proving ground. Porsche did their homework. Caymans and 911s are built differently and therefore have different cooling requirements underneath. That's all.
