Default Considering Gen I Cayman

Hey Guys,

Lately I have been looking into picking up a Gen I Cayman S. I keep hearing about how great of a car the Cayman is and I have really liked them since they were first released. I currently have a 996 Turbo and an 86 944, and expect the cayman to fall somewhere in the middle of these two. The 944 is loads of fun, and while underpowered, has great handling. I would expect the Cayman to be a similar experience but with a bit more bark and refinement.

Anyways, I have read much of the FAQ on the Gen I cars. I am a big DIY guy and do all of my own work and would imagine working on the Cayman to be similar to my other cars. Ive got two potential cars fairly close by that I have been looking at. They are both almost the exact same car with the same options (neither equipped with PASM). One is a CPO 06 with 26k miles for 36.5k, while the other is an 07 with 25k miles without a warranty for 39k. I believe the 07 does have a Remus exhaust. I have personally seen the 07 and it is in excellent condition, I will perhaps take a look at the 06 this weekend.

What is your opinion on these two cars? I think the dealer with the 06 is pretty firm on price, but if the condition is as advertised, I think with it being a CPO its not a bad deal. As for the 07, I think the price is fairly aggressive, but they are willing to deal to move the car and I could possibly work in a warranty for little to no additional cost or maybe even just have them knock some off. Any suggestions and insight are appreciated.

I would go for the 06 with the CPO warranty. 295 hp is not exactly under-powered. There have been many improvements in the Gen II which is why they are holding their value a little better.

I picked up a CPO cayman s with 38k miles for $34k. I was searching hard for a white/black model, so it was worth it for me to spend a little bit more on it.

I picked up my 2008 Cayman S in Feb. of 2012 with 21k miles for $35k (private sale), with remaining factory warranty. I have PASM and Sport Chrono. PASM is a must have option for me.

I appreciate the input from everyone. I ended up with an 07 Arctic Silver CS this weekend. Thus far it has been loads of fun and I have been quite impressed with its performance. It is a completely different driving experience than the 996tt and seems a bit more refined as well...
