Default Cayman with M96 Engine?

I was told recently that my '06 car has an M96 engine not the M97. It was built in 7/05...an early launch car. I read about the switch over later in '05 to M97 engines for '06 Caymans. I also read about the IMS bolt size differences.

Question....Did the 3.4 M96 evolve during the production r? Did porsche make any improvements to M96?

I did search. If I missed discussion then I would appreciate a point to thread.

My mechanic says frequent (2X/year) oil changes reduces my chances of an IMS failure. I don't track just drive hard. I have owned since new. I have low miles (14800).

Is this confirmed by a dealer through a VIN check? The PET (parts catalog) shows all US Caymans S as having the M97.21 engine.

It is more likely that you have and early M97.21 engine, with the smaller IMS bolt/carrier. Apparently this can be retrofit. You dealer can tell you for certain.

Cheers,

Not sure about within the Cayman lineage but I can tell you that among the 997s, 2005 997s came with older variations with the smaller IMS parts prone to failure, while 2006 and newer cars didn't have those parts. Furthermore, we have done pre-emptive replacements for IMS failures with older spec engines. You can certainly retro it.

I don't really know but I thought all 3.4's were "fine" and the m96's were contained to 3.2's (at least on the 987's).

Follow the external links pull down at: www.renntech.org

It will take you to a Porsche site where you can download the PET for all Porsches.

The '05 engines can have any of three IMS shaft/bearing/case types.
