Default Thinking about a new Cayman S

Haven't been here for a while but here goes;

Looking to get into a Cayman S. What are the "have to have options"?
I know I want the turbo wheels. Not sure about the different seat options but I do know that I want all the CF bits and pieces available. It will be Speed Yellow of course w/black int. Who loves their Cayman S and why? Who hates their Cayman S and why? Should I just chuck the whole Cayman idea and just get another used C4S?

Thank you in advance

Drive the Cayman to answer your questions about comparing it to another C4S. Suggest going to www.caymanclub.net for more feedback on Cayman possibilities.

A lot depends on how you plan on using the car, street, autox, DE. The 19" turbo wheels will give you a harsh ride, that is why many owners opted for the 18" wheels. My 06' CS has the sport chrono plus package and the PASM which if you are going to do any auotx or DE's is a must. I also have the 19" Carrera S wheels which makes a noticeable difference in handling performance. Try and drive ones with the different options and see what you like best. (back to back if possible)

If you are concerned about ride quality with 19" wheels, get PASM. That's what I have and ride quality in the "normal" mode is actually very good with the 19-inchers.

I agree with the others on the 18 vs 19" wheels. I also have pasm and like it a lot.

A couple of inexpensive options I like: sport steering wheel and painted wheel crests. Bigger buck options: PASM and xenons, sport seats if they fit you.

Xenon, sport steering wheel for sure, I like the sport chrono option but others dont think it's worth it.
Love the car...

So, what's the deal with the 19s? Too much rubber? 18s handle better?

Thinner sidewall with the 19" wheel, thus stiffer ride, other things equal. The slightly taller sidewall of the 18" will increase slip angle, giving a bit more communication before breaking traction. Of course, depending on specific tire, this could be good or bad. Maybe most important, is the larger and less costly selection of 18" tires.

If I were ordering a new Cayman S, I'd definitely get the sport bucket seats (GT2 seats), Bose/Nav/Bluetooth/iPod, 19" Carrera S II wheels, Xenons (if they're not already standard), Sport or Thicker Sport steering wheel, LSD, and PASM. Everything else is just window dressing.

I have a set of 18" wheels and a set of 19" wheels for my CS. As you would expect, the ride quality with the 18's is a bit better in that they cushion impacts from sharp bumps better. However, with PASM the ride quality with the 19's is still very good. There is no significant difference in weight -- the 19's are just ~1 lb heavier per wheel, including tires, so that's not a factor.

In terms of handling differences, it's hard to say. Both have more than enough grip for street driving. On the track I think the 19's would have the edge in performance. That's what factory test driver Walter Rohrl has said. However, I think the steering response of the 18's is a bit better. The 19's feel slightly dead on center.

IMHO the 19" wheels look a lot nicer. The 18" wheels seem so small when mounted on my Cayman.

Sport Chrono is a waste unless you have PDK... I'd never order Sport Chrono again unless it made a big difference (i.e. like overboost on the Turbo).

Why a waste? Could you elaborate?

Sport chrono is all marketing.

It's expensive, it adds an ugly (and useless) stopwatch on the dash, and I NEVER used it once on my Carrera S. The whole "it's for track days" is nonsense, too, since you'll get a transponder for lap times and you can get all kinds of other electronics to record your other metrics.

For PDK, it adds launch control and sport plus. For the Turbo, it adds overboost. Those are the only two circumstances I'd get it.
