Best Porsche Coupe of all time?
I give that award to the pre-74 911. A nice one is a real treat and even more fun to drive than a Cayman S (though I think they're great!)

I just drove a base Cayman today..... DAMN I want one!!!! Coming from a 944 N/A, a Cayman is just better in every way. Great little car.

The only other "new" Porsche I've driven is an '04 C4 cab that was pretty tatty and that left me a bit soured, but the Cayman was just fantastic.

In an answer...No

It is the car of the owner of the CaymanClub.net. Just a body kit (there are few other mods, but no GT3 drivetrain). Unfortunately I don't think Porsche will put the GT3 drive train in a Cayman at this point. Heck they won't even put the same gearing as the 997 in the car, much less the GT3 drivetrain.

I drove a Cayman S and a cayman back to back and it wasnt even good enough for the money to
keep me from buying a Z4M coupe which is more of an enjoyable coupe experience. The Z4M in my OPINION is more enjoyable. Considering it has 40 more HP, handles as well and has better brakes, for $20K less- its a serious alternative when considering a Cayman or boxster. Historically it follows the classic front engine sports car style. The cayman has a more modern interface.
I have driven many boxsters and those two cayman. I have had a 993TT 996GT3 and now the best of all the 997 GT3.
so I consider the number of cars i have tested to be a large segement. But best couple of Porsche all time? Any GT car.

I like the Z4M alot too, but I disagree about the brakes. Hard to beat the alloy monobloc 4-piston Brembos (Porsche) with 1-piston steel sliding calipers (BMW).

you can't compare a cayman to a 997gt3...well you can but the cars don't compare.

the CayS is a really cool car with a fun chassis, and mid engine cars are really fun to drive.

but for around the same weight and with 120 or so more HP...gt3 PWNS.

so let's back it up- what's the best porsche coupe you could get for 50-60k?

cayman S or a 993 TT I'd say...

I like the Cay S over the 996 coupe, and the 993TT over the 996TT (which is getting cheaper fast).

997S and 996GT3...both are at least 20k more expensive.

996 GT2 and 997GT3 are twice as expensive at over 100k.

Grant would know- but those long hood 911s from pre-74 are depending on condition, in that price range- more or less. One of those with a 3.0 engine swap would be a lot of fun. Or maybe just really restored- after all they only weighed 2400 lbs or so.

OK grant I agree (I can change my mind!!)
I was just talking about the touch feel
The design and the reliability is in the Caymans favor
the M's brakes had a better feel and the Caymans
brakes were down right MUSHY compared to my GT3.

Actually the 3.0SC (180hp) has less power than a 2.4S (190hp) or 2.7RS (210hp) or 2.8RSR (308hp)

The older/smaller mechanically injected motors have much sharper throttle response, sound far better, and redline MUCH higher too

Gotcha Most people suggest the 3.0SC since they're cheap and plentiful. A 3.0RSR motor would cost around $30k-$40k done right - not that it wouldn't be worth it
