The 993 Turbo is a very emotion-driven car to own; it is bloody fast, especially after some relatively minor upgrades (to bring it up to date), it is probably the best looking 911 of all time (to me at least), and a Porsche classic.
I'll know more after a few track days over the next few months. But I'm going to guess that the Cayman S is the better driver's car so I'd have to pick it over the Turbo.

I remeber when the 911 was first introduced. It had no where near the HP of the Vette and other American muscle cars, but people still wanted them. Based on what I've read on this forum, I'm in the tiny minority but to me the most important features in a car are its handling and stopping capabilities. As long as the car isn't seriously underpowered, I don't have to have a 350 to 400 HP engine in my car.
So to me anyway the Cayman is the ideal car. It's certainly not the fastest car, but it will handle with the best of them. And best of all, I won't have to get a second mortgage on my house to be able to afford to buy one.

fast1 - whatever minority your are in, I'm in it too! I think anyone that buys the Cayman, Boxster, Elise, Exige, S2000, ... is in the same minority. Hmm, seems like you are not alone

Give me a stock looking Cayman S, just stuff it with the X51 motor. I'd love a comparo with that and a 997S. Considering you probably can't buy a well optioned 997S for under $100k, I think the comparo would come out quite favorably in the Cayman S's court.
____________
that's what i have been saying all along. a x51 cayman is 100-110k (who's gonna do that? i dont know, but for arguments sake, let's assume someone did). and a 997S is 100k or so. that would be ain interesting comparison. am not saying one is better than the other, just would be very intrigued to see it done and compared.

Mooty I think it gets back to the mid-engine v. rear engine handling argument. I would argue that, all else being equal (motor, suspension "settings", etc...) the mid-engined Cayman S would smoke the 911. Well, ok, not smoke it, but I would bet it would out do it in every category. (..and please don't anybody mention "but it's not a 911" because, as much as I love 911s, I don't buy into that BS.)
Let's hope some of the Pcar rags decide to do just that kind of test!
What does the x51 motor make anyway? (..hp-wise..)
