Why no sun roof option ?
#3
If they really wanted to, they could have done it.......it just wasn't a priority.
VW bugs have one and other cars with even more radical sloping roofs have them. I have seen more than a few sunroofs installed in Audi TTs.....another car that supposedly couldn't have one.....they look factory when done. If developed it probably would have been one that doesn't slide internally but would tilt up and out......maybe a look Porsche didn't like on the car. Whatever the reasoning, they could have done it, but chose not to.

I agree Atlas_Croc. I'd like to see Porsche build at least one barebones purist design driven Porsche in the line up at under $100K. No backseat, and all those weight increasing doo dads. But with a 3.2 and low weight, mid engine handling... well no need to beat the dead horse of holding back the Cayman for the 911.

True driver's cars don't have sunroofs as it weakens the structure and puts heavy glass + components high up where it hurts the most.

i guess i'm not a true driver, as i was a bit disappointed that you can't get a sunroof. I'm thinking it might get a bit dark and claustrophobic in there without a sunroof, over time. wouldn't know, never had a car without a sunroof.

IMO: The only things a sun roof is good for are leaking, adding weight up high, and stealing an inch or two of helmet room. Sun roof delete was a great option on previous generation 911s. Rumour has it that you cannot get a 997 without the Leak Slot.
I open a sun roof three times per year.... to clean the four drains.

I hate sunroofs. You can't get a 997 WITHOUT a sunroof. I'm thankful that there is at least one coupe you can get w/o a sunroof. I don't like them for the following reasons:
1. Reduced headroom
2. Source of leaks, wind noise, and rattles (potential anyways)
3. 60 lbs of weight right at the top of the car
4. Another motor, transmission and seals to maintain or repair
5. They're so small on Porsches that the the "open air" experience is pretty lame anyways
6. They are included as standard, so you pay more for the car, even if you'd rather not have a s/r.

IIRC, for PAG to produce a non sunroof variant for the US Market, after crash test certifying the sunroof version, PAG would have to buid/submit non sunroof crash test cars, pay for testing, reports, certificaiton, etc....it is not financially viable in their opinion.
It is the same reason that the Carrera GT was pulled from the US for 2006 (and the cars sold to other markets); PAG didn't want to crash 2 more CGT's with the 'smart airbag' sensor system installed. The original CGT's were crash tested/certified without such a system.
Your DOT/EPA hard at work for you.

The large sunroof on the '87 924S I had owned looks like it would work on the Cayman S. It would tilt up, slide back, on top of the roof, or could be removed and stowed.
A factory sunroof was ordered with every vehicle I've owned. I use them all year.
This may be a Marketing, not Engineering, issue.

good i hope not -
sunroofs suck - main reason i bought a 996 instead of a 997 (well that and the 40K in the trunk of the 996)
my 996 has a sun roof which will eventually be expunged - when it starts to live on the track
