Carrera X51 Engine and Cayman S Marriage
Had a nice conversation with a local shop owner this weekend.
He told me he has a brand new Carrera X51 engine in his shop waiting to go into a Cayman as soon as it arrives here in the USA.
Anybody else doing this?
Seems a cool thing to do.

Jim - Since the X51 option costs $15k on top of the cost of the 3.8L motor, you can imagine that with labor it won't be too cheap

Cupcar,
I thought RUF has a 3.8L engine swap for ther Cayman S for about $40k. I don't know if they will do the X51 package though. RUF is doing that in the Boxster S now, so the Cayman mod is a given.

I didn't talk price, I was curious enough to ask my local dealer what the list price was on an X51 3.8 Carrera engine and they said: $34,454. I imagine a discount could be had...you would still have the original engine to re-install or sell or make a coffee table out of.
As to the installation, the shop in question is prepared to change the wiring harness if necessary and will either reprogram the stock brain if possible or install the proper, bespoke DME brain from Porsche.

Farnbacher Loles and Orbit are going to announce they are jointly building a super Cayman that will include engine upgrade, suspension, carbon fiber body parts, and more. The performance will blow away the 997S. If you are in the Danbury Connecticut area, drop by Farnbacher Loles to see the Cayman in person on wednesday 11/16.

I am curious how they would have obtained a Cayman now since the dealers are just getting a few in the next couple weeks and will not be able to sell them until January ...

Interesting that the 911 Carrera S costs $81,400 base + X51 option at $16,900= $98,300
Cayman S Base is $58,900 + X51 engine from parts department at $34,454= $93,354
This leaves you $4946 to do the Cayman S = X51 conversion if you compare the two sums- probably enough since it should be a relative bolt in (I don't know for sure though).
I would rather have the Cayman S with the X51 than the Carrera S with X51.

I doubt that the 997 engine will just drop in to the Cayman - after it needs to be fitted the other way around.
997CS also has several standard-fit items that would cost extra on the Cayman.

You may be right, it was not so easy to install the 996 engine into the Boxster because the fuel injection was taller on the 996. i understand that most of the conversions lowered the engine in the chassis to clear the injectin stacks.
We'll know in January!!
BTW, I heard a rumor from a PCNA contact that the engineers at Weissach have built a 3.8 Cayman and that when Weideking drove it he told them he didn't want to see another one built.....I think he is worried about his cash cow 911 profits.

I wonder how much the existing 3.4l engine can be tuned to... Surely another 30bhp must be achievable, which would make it 242bhp/tonne - much closer to a 997S than a standard 997...

... and plenty of Boxster owners could be interested on a brand new Cayman S engine.
With a PCA membership, Porsche parts and labor are 10% cheaper in plenty of dealers. With a Porsche dealer owner as a friend, parts and cars are even cheaper.
So, discounted Cayman S + discounted X51 - resale value on a 3.4 + labor ==> low 80s.
3000 lbs, 381Hp on a brand new mid-engined car sounds like fun.
