My handle here was NC_P_Croc, changed to DB_NC_83SC. I've now treated the seats twice with Leatherique. Man that stuff is magic, unbelievable transformation. I'd heard about it but never tried it, messy, many steps but what great stuff. Have put two coats of Harly wax (yellow carnauba, similar to Zymol or P21S) on the car... LOVE driving it, old school, no power-assisted-anything, the more I drive it the more I love it. I would have loved to get a Cayman, but with IBM laying off people faster than they can hire in India or Brazil, I made the right choice. If the axe comes, I keep the SC and sell the Saab. I'm restraining myself, want Bosch H4 headlights badly and the newer Carrera oil cooler , but first things first (car cover, windshield shade, register it with NC's insane 3% 'highway use tax' (bandits !), inspection, etc etc etc...
There really is no substitute....

Congrats on the SC she is a real beauty. I had 2 SC's and they really are great. Just remember the can be a bit tail happy without the LSD.

Factory AC. I've read that newer (is it rotary?) compressors work better than original, I've thought down the road about conversion to R134A, I've also read about auxiliary vents. It doesn't work very well at all. These two months in NC suck weatherwise, so I'll drive the Saab with nice AC and then next spring attend to the AC in the SC. For now my task is ensuring everything mechanical on the SC is up to snuff (replacing clutch, alternator, bits here and there). AND getting several coats of carnauba on her.
Man I love this car. I have H4s on the way, I've heard the make a huge difference at night.

A/C in an SC. You mean the old engine heater.LOL The systems were really not very good and robbed the engine of a fair amount of power. I was happier with my second SC without A/C. You may think about removing the air pump also if it still has it. All this added drag taking vital power away from the car and is not really needed.
As far as 134 goes it does not work very well without the engine reving, so when sitting in traffic you will see less A/C than the current setup. There are upgrades available that add aditional condensors, better compressors and weight for big $$ but it will get you better cooling.
Good luck and enjoy the ride, besides the limitation of the A/C and some other minor issues they really were great cars.

Nice ride, I would give anything to have my SC back. I've given up on finding it, so I'm going to find a decent SC Targa as soon as I get around to selling the Boxster. It's sad but true, I will not be able to find a good example of an SC for what I can get out of the Boxster....I'm thinking about 15 or 16k.

very good condition, but high miles...105k right now, but any SC that I would consider would have to have over or at least close to 100k miles on it. I am scared of garage queens

The cars ran realtively clean. The air pump was only needed for startup emission requiremnts and used to heat up the cat when cold. I modified the entire exhaust removed the cat and pump and it still passed NJ emissions inspection with room to spare. If it was only so easy on the newer cars.

Well I'm doing the right thing for the SC. This week it's getting a new clutch, new alternator, 930 turbo tie rods, valve adjustment, new lid struts front and rear, wheels repainted, new black lug nuts, H4 headlights, painting the cooling fan, yada yada yada.... I'm going to take care of it, it will take care of me. I'm very happy I found a good classic.
This morning, the local tech pointed at my car, with a 996 in the bay next to it, and calmly said 'this is a better-built car than that'...... pretty amazing given the advent of modern technology...

When I arrived at the dealer and saw the car in person my jaw dropped, it is far more impressive than even in the pictures I had been sent. The Carrera tensioner update had been done, one guy spotted the oil lines. I've ordered the airbox popoff valve, and the car cover I ordered was on my porch when I got home. Coincidentally (or not) there's a local Hurricane Region concours for charity tomorrow, so she'll be there! I'm loving this car. Not having experience with older air cooled cars, I had no idea how well these cars are built, how much they're built like a tank, how good the materials are. The interior is near perfect. I had to post one photo. What a find, 58000 one-owner miles, she has a good home now.
