Carrera was taken because of their success in the Carrera Panamerica race.
I liked it better when the name "Carrera" was then reserved production runs of the special FIA homologation street variants necessary to build racing cars. Cars such as the 356 Carrera with the 4 cam engine, the Carrera 2.7 RS, Carrera 3.0 RS, Turbo Carrera, etc.
When Porsche started calling all 911's "Carrera", something was lost in my opinion.
