I did PPI for a used Cayman and the mechanic found the car has possible IMS or some engine problem.
PPI was done by PCA sponsor shop (shop owner had 20years Porsche Audi dealer technician career)

2007 (late 2006 build) Cayman base 987.1, 2.7 engine about 100k miles. MT.
Test drive went well, but after engine warmed up I felt some rattle like sound in the cabin. It only happens after the car warmed up and the throttle on condition. Throttle off makes no rattle, Clutch on or off do not matter (so I think the noise is not related with clutch or transmission at least).
I did PPI with Porsche specialist. They found that the noise is not normal (I did not asked about the noise before PPI, but they just found same thing after a test drive themselves). The noise was more like knocking under the car. They removed both engine covers to check pully, pump etc., but confirmed that the noise is coming from Engine. Unfortunately I forgot to record the noise.
They think it is IMS failure start symptom for very early stage, but not sure until open the engine.
Asked over rev report and this is it.
Range 1: 53254
Range 2: 1696
Range 3: 9
Range 4: 0
Range 5: 0
Range 6: 0
I am not sure but feel like the engine rev up is much faster than another 07 Boxster I tested same day. So maybe LWFW installed (can not confirm this) and the car was driven hard.
The car has Action cam mount in the cabin, and PCA member's car, so maybe used on track (HPDE).
The reason I interested in this year (07~08) base model was 2.7 do not have bore scoring issue and the IMS failure is rare (I know it is not 0%). But some how I found an rare example.
So I did not purchased the car, but really want to know if any one had IMS failure with 2006-2008 987. Or if this is something else. The picture is RMS leak.
I am not a mechanic, so I won't try and speculate about if this is a major problem or not, but in general I will advise you that these are not rare cars. If there is anything sketchy about a car you test drive just move on, there are more Caymans in the sea.

Thanks for reply and I agree with you. I am now keep looking 996 or other 987s. The price is almost cheapest Cayman and had no accident, all maintenance done etc,,, so. if the engine was fine, I think it was a great deal.

You know the saying, and you know it is true. The cheapest Porsche usually ends up being the most expensive one. Cheaper to pay a bit more up front for something better, than pay a lot more down the road to make it better.

That's correct. Now I understand what that means. I am just glad that I did PPI and not purchased that cheapest but possibly most expensive example. Thanks for reply.
With respect to the oil leaking there, the only way to know if it is the RMS or the IMS is to pull the transmission and flywheel and take a look. It could be one, the other or both.
