987.2 CS or 981 CS: which is the better weekend fun car?

Greetings!

I recently sold my 997 gt3 in an effort to reduce car related expenses.

However, I still want to have a fun weekend car, but keep the budget under $45k. I am considering a 09-10 987.2 CS or 2014 981 CS. It appears the 987’s are in the mid $30s and 981’s starting in the mid $40s.

Which one is more fun to drive around town? I will only drive it on the weekends and about 2k miles annually. I only want a 6MT and have no plans to track the car. I prefer the looks of the 981 interior, but it’s a toss up on the exterior.

Will they both continue to depreciate at a similar rate or will the delta between them narrow or widen 5 years from now when I most likely will sell it. The 987.2 seem to have stabilized the last couple of years.

I appreciate any feedback.

Think you're right about the 987.2 stabilizing, 981 may have some more to go.
987.2 has a slightly smaller, more raw feel. 981 feels a little more modern/luxurious inside.
My vote is for the 987.2S, better value right now with the same 9A1 DFI engine.
You can also get 987.2 base 2.9's right now for about 25K real sales prices which is the low cost Porsche deal at the moment with a non-DFI 9A1.

Posted this a few years ago about the 987.2 R vs. the 981 GTS. It's relevant because the 987.2 S vs. 981 S has similar differences that are talked about in the piece.

Not exactly the assessment you were looking for but I did have a base 981 and now have a base 987.2 so I can speak to everything but the S power levels.

Handling wise, the two cars are not dissimilar with the 987.2 having slightly better steering feel with the hydraulic rack. In overall feel the 987.2 does feel a bit more raw than the 981 which has a slightly more luxurious, slick feel to it, and not in a bad/muted/numb way either.

981 interior is more modern as you mentioned but neither are cutting edge tbh.

While I do like the exterior styling of the 987.2, I think the 981 is the better looking car. Just more aggressive and masculine but this is very subjective.

FWIW, my base 987.2 with its 265 hp feels stronger than my base 275 hp 981 did.

987.2 didn’t sound as nice as my 981 did, be it intake or exhaust noise. Catback on my 987.2 makes it sound better but a catback on my 981 made it sound like a GT3 and the intake noise on the 981 was better as well, imo.

987.2 shifter way more vague than the 981, ssk fixed that.

Also the throttle response of the non-sport Chrono 987 was much lazier than my non-sport Chrono 981. Again, cheap sprint booster fixed that.

So really the 987.2 wasn’t much behind the 981 from a driving perspective. Any small issue I had was corrected fairly easily and cheaply.

And as someone mentioned the 987.2s are kind of a well kept secret right now and seem to be great value, especially the 2.9. I picked mine up about a year ago for $25k with 60k miles. About $20k less than I paid for my 981 a year prior. And, to my thinking, no cayman is really that fast anyway, even an S, so why not enjoy the aspects of the car that do shine like the chassis/driver feedback which a base car does just as well as an S. If anything the base car allows you to use more of its potential on the street.

987 hands down. better steering narrower/lower center console. more driver focused cabin. nice mix of old and new.

cayman S are going up in value it seems. on the other end base boxsters are most plentiful.

jump on the 987.2 train. you'll have a blast and be glad you did.

Boring vid but the data is sound. I reluctantly say that owning a pristine base 987.2

Availability may also help you decide. It's tough to find 987.2's in 6MT.
