Fabspeed-How to tame the volume of exhaust noise?
Calling all performance exhaust gurus. I'm a new owner of a beautiful 2011 Cayman S and only have one thing I would like to change. The system is emissions compliant and is a complete system from headers back. At a very specific RPM range (1900-2600) it drones at an interior db level of 95-96. This is 10db above the threshold for creating permanent hearing loss. At other RPMs it is a more tolerable 89-90db. There are no leaks and all is well with the system but I need to tone it down, hopefully without replacing the entire system (I know I could sell it for something but that's not the point, it sound great). I have had suggestions of putting in a dead end pipe/stop, trying to see if a Burns inline additional muffler will help (if they will fit), and replacing the headers (but no idea other than putting stock back on). What say you as to the best approach to taming the beast?

Don't drive @ 2000 RPM. I've had Tubi and Fabspeed exhaust systems with stock headers and both had drone. I liked both at WOT on track. I think the answer is stock mufflers.

Thank you for your reply. I've also heard that maybe some Dynamat in the rear can help. If I go back to stock mufflers, would I lose a ton of performance & would it kill off all of the better exhaust sounds? The car is faster than I can drive it now so I can lose a little performance, And, if the stock mufflers won't destroy the sound completely, but just knock it down some, it sounds like a plan.

Nice chatting with you today Jim : ) For your reference, the majority of the performance gains on these cars are in the headers so you wouldn't lose a large amount of performance. Any loss can easily be made up for and exceeded via an ECU tune given it doesn't have one, I know we didn't touch on that topic. That said, you'll certainly loose a good bit of the "better exhaust sounds". However, I can help you tweak that a bit if you put the factory exhaust back on and like the lack of cabin presence but want to kick it up a notch. I can switch you to catless headers to give you more sound on throttle, and/or I can set you up with our X-Pipe Tips to smooth out the exhaust note a bit more (factory tip assemblies have a head on exhaust collision).Of course there is always our valvetronic exhaust system we spoke about. Either way, we have options to play around with and I'd love to help tailor your car to maximize your driving experience.

System Modification
After investigation, it looks like I may be selling or finding someone who might like to trade a stock cat-back system for my Fabspeed cat-back. The Fabspeed is fabulous and it sounds great but I prefer a more civilized sound since I am an audio engineer. Since I am new to Rennlist, I need to get advice on the best way to communicate this on this forum. Thanks

Hey!! Sorry for being a little late to the party, what system did you purchase? I would love to chat about some possibilities and correcting any issues you may be facing. Depending on the set up that you have, some modifications sacrifice the crisp exhaust note for the performance gains. While we strive to create exhaust systems that will offer both performance gains AND that beautiful ear candy, some systems are a little more aggressive. I'll reach out directly to chat!! |
For a lower cost alternative look into muffler modification by Carnewal. Their GT muffler modification allows more sound out of the stock Porsche mufflers. The best part is that there is almost no drone produced. |
OP post is confusing.
what headers do you have? what exhaust do you have? what are you trying to accomplish? |
Thought it was clear, but hopefully this helps...
Hi FactoryMatt,
This is a Gen1 complete Fabspeed Maxflo system from headers back. I have replaced the catback portion with a stock system and Soul Performance Tips (Fabspeed headers retained. The Fabspeed catback is for sale in case anyone is interested - asking price $1250 [new retail on this portion of the system is $2,395, so ~ half off + shipping https://www.fabspeed.com/porsche-987...haust-system/] - pix on request. Its a great sounding exhaust, but as an older audio engineer specializing in classical music, I preferred something a little less aggressive. My loss will someday be someone's gain :-) Jim

I presume you have the race headers? you need cats if youre looking for a smoother sound no matter what exhaust you have.
