Default Cayman

As the Cayman got newer did they get away from the IMS concern? I find info stating IMS repair for up to 2008, but not after. Making me think that they updated the engine and no longer had trouble.

the 987.1 from 06-08, had the M97 , which had an IMS but not too many people have had problems with. Most problems seem to be con rod bearing related and/or oil starvation in track cars. 09 and up, the 987.2, had the 9A1, which is a completely redesigned motor, which doesn't have an IMS. This is a more bulletproof motor than the M97, but seems to have problems of its own, like cylinder (or bore) scoring. The experts advise staying below 3-4 K rpm until the motor has warmed up.

The 987.2 and 981 (and 911 equivalents) are drastically better in stock form than the previous generation, but as stated above, cylinder scoring and chain stretching are known issues. Shorter oil change intervals, better oils, and if tracking these cars, adding extra engine and oil cooling (deep sump) and running race oils greatly help. Well maintained and kept cool, the 9A1 engine has a snowball's chance in hell to actually wear out.
