I've had my 07 for 7 or 8 years now and it has been nearly flawless. Unfortunately I don't drive it regularly and it can sit for several weeks at a time in the garage. I keep it on a battery tender. It only has 66,000 miles on it and I did the 60K service myself for abour $250.00 in parts. The only issues (minor) that I have had are the tire pressure sensors and the headliner which are now resolved. Yes the car is amaizing! Go for it.

Never had a single issue with my three P cars until my Cayenne hit 100K miles - then I added u-joints up-front, and a new fuel pump. I'd say that isn't too bad. Both my 987.1/2 have been great. That said - the IMS is an issue that can affect the car no doubt.

Porsche cars are ranked as among the best for quality and reliability. They are generally close or equal to Lexus. But...your talking about a used, 11 year old sportscar.

I've had my 2006 Cayman S for two years, plus a few months. The only problem is my inability to keep from modifying and farkling it.

Had I left it stock, I would have had only oil changes to do. But, I got the bug and changed out a lot of stuff to 911 GT3 spec. Working on stereo nav unit replacement, now. Installed a backup cam this weekend.

I love my Cayman so much. It's like a Jeep, though. A great platform to tweak and make better. And better. Between here and planet-9.com, all the info you need to make a decision is out there.
The main questions to answer are, can I spend more than $30,000 and will I track it? If yes, then you look for a 2009 and above. 2009 Cayman Base 2.9L can be had at or under $30K. 2006-08 2.7L base maybe $21K. If no tracking and a budget that has to stay under $30K, a 2006-2008 Cayman S in good shape, with proven maintenance can still be a reliable long term car.

07 CS, got it at 60k miles. Now at 87k miles.

So far, it's needed:
60k mile check up, and did brake lines, belts, plugs and coils
oil changes

Unexpected stuff:
AOS - cost $450 at an INdy
Window regulator - $160 at dealer

Things it needs:
new TPMS - I forgot to buy them when I got new tires, Duh.

That's it. Has been great. Go for it. I was thinking about selling it for a Macan, but it is just too good a car. gets driven alot more than the 996.

A well maintained and responsibly driven Cayman will last a very long time. I made the plunge and couldn't be happier with my 2006 Cayman S. The car is amazing.

^ yes. It's better when driven like it's meant to be driven. Steering lightens up.

Default Bought '08 2.7 at 88k 3 years ago.....

......has 111,000 now and zero unscheduled maintenance. Check that, I had to replace windshield washer bottle. Still has original clutch and water pump. it was a one owner and came with a detailed history of servicing.

While the reliability of a car over the first eleven years of its life is important, the more pertinent issue for you will be the costs (Financial and psychological) of keeping the car on the road for the next X years. Find a good independent shop and see if they won't provide you data on costs for routine maintenance as well as the repair of different possible/likely failures, the goal being to estimate the potential cost of annual ownership. Don't forget to factor in "incidentals" like tires, potential modifications and depending on your situation, insurance. The final estimate won't be precise, but it may give you a better feeling for how comfortable you are with the prospects of owning the car.

My 2006 S is pushing 89k miles. So far this has been the most reliable off all the Porsche's I've had over the years.

Headliner was replaced recently, as was the windshield due to a rock and I just replaced the AOS. Amazingly easy job btw. That's been it besides routine brakes and oil changes. I do track the car regularly and it's held up incredibly well mechanically.

I probably just cursed myself with that last statement lol.

I have an 06 S with 78K miles on it. Bought it about 9 months ago and have put on 11K miles so far. (I like to drive it!) 130 miles round trip to work. 2 oil changes, new AOS (agree this was pretty easy), new coils (3 were cracked), new plugs, new air filters, new Soul exhaust, 2 new rear tires. All done by me. Car drives great. I do hear a leak in the rear shock somewhere which I anticipate replacing soon. This car is a blast to drive and surprisingly easy to work on.

The thing about Cayman, or any Porsches for that matter, is that you have to drive and use it regularly. A lot of cylinder/bore scorings are as a result of their car sitting in the garage weeks or months at a time. And after winter hibernation, during startup, the entire engine, cylinders, pistons, rods, cams etc.....are all bone dry. Oil won't start lubricating until it is circulated and distributed to the areas that are just grinding away on metal to metal contact. If you drive you Porsches regularly, there will always be a film of oil plating the critical parts. Personally I wouldn't shy away from high-mileage cars. In fact a 5 year old car with only a few thousand miles would require very close scrutiny in order to avoid owning a car with such problems as stated.
